It's been a great year for gamers and we pick our faves over the past 365 days. We also take it back to 1998, ten years ago, and discuss that classic year in gaming history while roasting marshmallows over our yule log.

Game designer outlines 'Unreal' hardware requirements

We got the official recommended specs for forthcoming DX10 shooter Crysis last week, now the Inquirer has some basic recommendations for two major forthcoming Unreal Engine 3-based games, from the graphics engine's head developer Tim Sweeney. 'Unreal Tournament 3' demo really coming to PCs

The game that introduced an entire generation to the joys of deathmatching takes the first step toward a comeback with today's release of the Unreal Tournament 3 PC demo. Starting at noon Pacific time, gamers can snag three levels of the game from Fileplanet--two deathmatch maps, named HeatRay and ShangriLa, and one Capture the Flag map, named Suspense.

E3: 'Unreal Tournament III' trailer

Die-hard deathmatch fans have been waiting for a true Unreal Tournament sequel since UT2004 hit PCs more than three years ago. The lastest iteration will be exclusive to the PC and PS3 "in 2007" when it hits in November--wording that makes us think it's highly likely we'll see the game (or a reasonable facsimile) appearing on the 360 at some point next year.
