Motorola H17txt will read incoming texts

Motorola announced the Motorola H17txt today, and no, it's not an April Fools' joke. The Bluetooth headset has MotoSpeak, Motorola's name for its text-to-speech technology. It is designed to read text messages to you so you never have to take your eyes off the road. Funnily, it also promises to read out acronyms like "lol" and "l8r" as actual words. It will also read out incoming caller/texter ID, plus it comes with a list of autoresponse messages.

Other features include A2DP streaming so you can listen to your podcasts or your phone's … Read more

Portable text-ing

Software maker Some PDF specializes in utilities for converting and extracting data to and from Portable Document Format files, generally known as PDFs. There's a growing need for such utilities as PDFs become increasingly the document format of choice for posting information like warranties, instruction manuals, and data sheets online or in corporate networks and other environments. PDFs are easy to use, but creating and managing them usually means forking over big bucks for a honking huge software package from Adobe Systems, inventor of the PDF, or similarly pricey third-party software that is also aimed at the enterprise-level user. … Read more

PDF viewing tool

Cool PDF Reader provides users with a fast and easy way of viewing PDF files. With simple controls and some added benefits, this program is a fine alternative to more popular programs like Acrobat.

The program's interface shouldn't take too much work to understand, since its tightly packed command icons all come with descriptions when the mouse rolls over them. This is fortunate, since the program's online Help file is a confusing maze that we could never sort out. The program begins with users selecting a PDF by using a standard file tree search method. The document … Read more

TreedBNotes Pro is a personal information manager, database program, and word processor. TreedBNotes Pro also includes an alarm and reminder feature plus password protection and encryption capabilities. Still not impressed? TreedBNotes Pro's e-book feature helps you write that great American novel or training manual (that is, formatting the text, sharing or not with other readers, and creating a Table of Contents and fully searchable text; the creative writing part, well, TreedBNote Pro leaves that to aspiring Melvilles and Grishams).

TreedBNotes Pro sets itself apart from similar programs in the way it stores data in tree-like structures which lets users … Read more

PCD previews a few messaging phones

PCD didn't have any major announcements at CTIA, but it did give us a brief sneak peek at what we can expect from them this year. All of the offerings appear to be messaging phones, with full QWERTY keyboards for easier texting. I apologize in advance for just taking photos of posters; they didn't have any real hardware on hand at the booth.

The first handset we saw was codenamed the TXT8026, which has a 2.2-inch color screen with a 1.3-megapixel camera, a microSD card slot, Bluetooth 2.0, an MP3 player, and measures around 3.… Read more

According to the company, five players have already signed up for the service including Shane Battier, LaMarcus Aldridge, Jordan Farmar, Eric Gordon, and Spencer Hawes. Recovery.gov blocked search engine tracking

Update: As of 8 a.m. PST, within three hours of this story first going live, it appears that President Obama's Web team has (silently) pulled the robots.txt file from the Recovery.gov Web site. The site is now open to Web crawlers of all kinds.

The Obama administration has apparently opted to forbid Google and other search engines from indexing any content on the newly launched Recovery.gov.

Is this even more evidence that the administration's much-publicized commitment to transparency is simply hype?

Recovery.gov, which went live Tuesday, is set to act as a central … Read more
