How to hide the Facebook ticker

If you have checked Facebook today, you have probably noticed a sidebar ticker has been added to the right-hand column of the newly redesigned News Feed, along with complaints and snarky comments about the new News Feed and this ticker. About the ticker, Facebook says:

Ticker, on the right-hand side of your account, lets you see all your friends' activity in real-time. When you hover over an item on ticker, you can see the full story and join the conversation as it happens. Ticker updates itself as stories happen. This gives you a more complete picture of what your friends … Read more

From anywhere in the app, you can get stock readings by hitting the Get a Quote button on the bottom of the screen. Type in a ticker symbol or company name to bring up all of a stock's vitals, as well as options to find relevant news, set alerts, and add the stock to your Watch List. … Read more

Fine feeding

Desktop Ticker is a free scrolling RSS feed display that you can place anywhere on the desktop for an unobtrusive yet instantly accessible and highly customizable news crawl. It's easy to use yet offers lots of options. It can follow news, stocks, and pretty much any other feed you can subscribe to.

Desktop Ticker's small dock-style interface resembles a ticker tape, only with small directional arrows at either end for quickly scrolling forward and back and, on the right, an icon to minimize the display and close the program. A left-side menu has three entries: File, for managing … Read more

RSS scroll for Firefox

RSS Ticker is a free Firefox extension that displays your subscribed RSS feeds in a scrolling toolbar. It's easy to use, customizable, and an effective way of staying on top of things without cutting away from your browsing.

We installed RSS Ticker and restarted Firefox. RSS Ticker began scrolling preloaded headlines along the bottom of our browser window. A pop-up notified us that our saved RSS feeds would appear shortly and also offered a link to instructions for adding new feeds, which is as easy as saving a page in Live Bookmarks. We browsed to some news sites and … Read more

Disappointing fantasy drafter

FanDraft - Fantasy Basketball Draft Board provides all the tools for holding your own fantasy draft, but it falls short of the competition on several different levels.

We were initially very excited about this program, thanks to its professional-looking interface. We needed to visit the Help file's dictionary to understand all the various terms and elements, but we got on track after a few minutes. We got a good feeling from this program during setup, as it let us organize our teams, draft order, and even draft sounds via a helpful setup Wizard that eliminated any guesswork. Unfortunately, this … Read more

At-a-glance stock information

Stock Ticker Application Bar does exactly what it sets out to do: it adds a running stock ticker to the top of your screen. It wasn't the most attractively designed program we've seen, but the no-frills approach makes it easy to operate and use.

As soon as you click on the program's desktop icon, a ticker-style bar is added to the top of your window. The attractive ticker is colorful without being garish, and it quickly displayed the most current stock information. It offers backward and forward navigational buttons so that you can easily find specific stock … Read more

News junkies can rejoice over Magnesium: RSS Ticker 7. This unique download allows Web surfers to keep an eye on the news while doing almost anything.

This program comes to users in the form of a classic news ticker, a scrolling line of information that never stops. This one appears at the bottom of a user's screen and stays on top of all open items. A small line of text scrolls from right to left and details some of the biggest headlines around the world. Users can roll their mouse over a headline to get a description of the … Read more

Free, effective feed reader

The unobtrusive design of this free Firefox add-on to read Live Bookmarks scored points with us, as did RSS Ticker's easy customization.

The program adds a slender feed bar right below your status bar, but through the Options menu you can choose to place it below your bookmarks toolbar. The Options menu also lets you change the feed update frequency, and the ticker speed. The black on white text was easy to read, and didn't interfere with our Web viewing. Likewise, the scrolling headlines were inconspicuous. We were able to easily add and remove feeds by simply selecting … Read more

Featured Freeware: Titlebar Ticker

If you don't want to spend a lot of time checking your RSS newsreader for updated feeds, you can do it on the fly with this application, which places a headline ticker at the top of the currently active window in addition to offering the standard reader.

U.S. Election Day downloads

All eyes will be on America on Tuesday as unprecedented numbers vote in the 2008 presidential elections and state propositions. How will you keep track throughout the day?

Your gut may lead you to constantly refresh several news sites for the latest headlines. That'll keep you current, but will also keep you from your daily duties. Obsessing over an RSS reader and notifications is smarter, and less disruptive to your work flow. Feed Demon and RSS Bandit are good choices, but an RSS ticker might be even better at delivering headline news to political news junkies.
