For some, work is a chore. For JD Samson & Men, music is a labor of love. Nowhere is that more apparent than on the electronic outfit's new, aptly titled album, "Labor." The LP's 13 tracks tackle heavy, highly personal topics suited for a therapy session -- gender identity, relationships, the challenges of making it in today's musical landscape -- yet listeners will likely experience a post-confessional lightness, buoyed by Men's synth-driven dance sound. I recently spoke to JD Samson about "Labor," the tour, gender identity, ex-bandmate Kathleen Hanna, and her favorite … Read more
Get ready, "Star Wars" fans: The first trailer from the upcoming final season of "The Clone Wars" is here, and it's a lot of fun.
Earlier this month, Netflix announced that it will be making the 13 episodes of the final season of the animated "Star Wars" show available to subscribers starting March 7. Now, it has released the trailer for the season, and "Star Wars" fans have a lot to be excited about.
If you watch the "Star Wars" movies enough, you can retell the epic story of Jedi, Sith Lords, droids, tauntans, wampas, Wookiees, Yoda, and the Death Star without too much effort. Now try to re-create every memorable scene stitch by stitch on a 30-foot tapestry.
Wampas are ill-tempered beasts. They enjoy hanging out in ice caves on Hoth and attempting to eat young Jedi. They can be defeated if you are quick on your feet (or while dangling upside-down) and have mastered at least the basic skills of using the Force. Once the wampa is overcome, its head can be used as a nice decoration above your fireplace.
Our Nerd Home, a site for nerdy home projects, put together a tutorial for a DIY wall-mounted wampa-head trophy using just $20 of material. Thankfully, it doesn't involve actually traveling to Hoth and dismembering a wampa.… Read more
Every second, another star explodes. When it does so, it gives birth to the very metals and minerals out of which the universe is made. This we know. But until this week, the exact process by which the giant balls of fire meet their dramatic death was something of a mystery.
Thanks to Caltech and NASA's Nuclear Spectroscopic Telescope Array (NuStar), that mystery is beginning to unravel.
By using NuStar's orbiting telescopes, scientists determined that the insides of stars actually slosh around a bit before stars burst into the beautiful cosmic mess that we call a supernova. They figured this out by looking at Cassiopeia A (Cas A), a supernova produced when a star with more than eight times the mass of our own sun exploded about 11,000 years ago. Since that time, the remnants from the big blast have fanned out dramatically -- Cas A takes up 10 light years of space in the cosmos, making it visible from Earth. It is believed to have appeared in our skies in roughly 1671.… Read more
With explosive drums, fuzzed-out guitars, and Wolfmother-style vocals, YB's first English-language single, "Cigarette Girl," might finally break YB in the West. Though already regarded as the Bon Jovi of South Korea, YB has not made much of a dent stateside -- unless you happened to catch the band at one of its sold-out 2006 NYC performances or at its acclaimed 2007 SXSW showcase. Under new manager Doug Goldstein, who formerly managed Guns N' Roses, Danzig, and Blind Melon, they just might make it here. As YB prepared for its first US mini-tour in seven years, frontman Do-Hyun … Read more
