DiffEngineX finds Excel data differences fast

So important is Microsoft Excel to the world's data that the smallest difference between datasets can have consequences that ripple outward like a stone thrown in a calm pond. DiffEngineX is a powerful tool that identifies the differences between two Excel workbooks or individual worksheets, even thousands at a time. But unlike standard difference analysis, it takes into account any new or blank rows, cells, and columns. It's not something you can just fire up and run, but the payoff for a little prep is accurate identification of actual differences in huge amounts of data in minutes or … Read more

Manufacture tight inventories with MRP_Excel.zip

MRP_Excel.zip from Production-Scheduling.com is a free Manufacturing Resource Planning tool in an Excel workbook. It uses no macros or VBA code and it's not locked: anyone who knows Excel can customize it to suit his or her needs.

Excel-based MRP systems have several advantages, such as the ability to use schedules and other data already entered in Excel; greater familiarity and less complexity than a full-scale MRP system; and, best of all, lower cost. MRP offers some significant features, including a Purchase Action Report that identifies schedule-critical purchase orders, a single-level Bill of Material Structure, and a … Read more

How to enter formulas in Numbers

When you purchase a new Mac it almost goes without saying that some sort of office productivity suite is required, and though, based on popularity, some might gravitate to Microsoft's Office, there are others available as well, such as OpenOffice, NeoOffice, some standalone word processors, and also Apple's iWork suite.

iWork's programs include Pages for word processing, Keynote for presentations, and a relatively unique approach to spreadsheets with its Numbers program, which if you are used to Excel, offers some similar ways to manage data, albeit with some uniquenesses.

Unlike most spreadsheet programs that offer a seemingly … Read more

Save spreadsheets and money with Accel

Accel Spreadsheet is part of SSuite Office, a freeware alternative to Microsoft Office. Accel is to SSuite as Excel is to Office, functioning equally well in both standalone and integrated mode. Accel can save files in Excel format as well as text, CSV, and native formats, making it widely compatible not only with Excel but also other spreadsheets and financial tools. While we could open and edit most of the Excel formatted files we created with Accel, the free tool couldn't access Excel files created in Office 2010. However, the capability to create files Excel can open is more … Read more

U.K. student crowned Excel world champion

Rebecca Rickwood, a 15-year-old student from Cambridge, has been crowned the Microsoft Excel world champion, the BBC reports.

Spreadsheet whiz Rebecca beat 78 rival students in the final round in a competition that saw 228,000 hopefuls from 57 countries competing for the title using Excel 2007. For her troubles, she was awarded $5,000.

We didn't know competitive spreadsheet construction was a thing, but we were fools--the brain-melting challenge involves performing timed challenges, demonstrating that contestants possess the Excel skills to pay the bills, presumably without using Clippy.

Google Docs bumps maximum file size to 10GB

Google Docs users can now upload and work with files and documents as large as 10 gigabytes.

In a Google+ post from yesterday, Google product manager Scott Johnston announced the latest enhancement that boosts the maximum Google Docs file size from 1 GB previously.

However, the increased file size will mainly benefit users with paid accounts.

People who use Google Docs for free are still limited to 1 GB of storage space in total for uploaded files, though documents created directly online don't count toward that quota. But users with paid accounts that range anywhere from $5 a year … Read more

Best free alternatives to top-selling software

Later this month I'll be canceling my subscription to a leading security suite that runs on two of my home-office PCs. I'll replace it with Microsoft's free Security Essentials, which I've been using on my notebook since I bought it two years ago. I realized several months ago that I simply no longer needed to spend money for the convenience of an all-in-one security app.

That got me thinking: Is there any software that the average PC user needs to pay for? Most of us bought our current operating system--usually Windows or Mac OS X--as … Read more

Reviewed: Office 365

Office 365, announced today, gives professionals and small businesses a subscription service that lets them work from anywhere using familiar-feeling Web-enabled applications. Combined with hosted versions of Exchange, SharePoint, and Lync, Office 365 is designed to enable users to share, collaborate, and communicate in the cloud. In our testing during the beta, we found that the tools worked well across the board (with some hiccups), and expect that many people who use Office on desktop Macs and PCs will appreciate the familiar look and feel, which should help them get up and running quickly.

Obviously, Office 365 is going to … Read more
