How to take screenshots on your Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1

The Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 lacks a native screenshot app. If you don't want to root your Android Honeycomb tablet but still want to take screenshots, here's how:

USB drivers, JDK and Android SDK

Step 1: Download and install the the Samsung mobile USB drivers.

Step 2: Download and install the Java Development Kit (JDK) from Oracle.

Step 3: Download and install the latest Android Software Development Kit.

Step 4: At the end of the Android SDK installation, choose to start the SDK Manager. After it's done searching for packages, click the Close button.

An unexpected Prizefight: TouchPad vs. PlayBook

Now, we could have taken the obvious route with our latest tablet Prizefight. The HP TouchPad is the new tablet kid on the block and of course the "on the nose" comparison would be the iPad 2. Less on the nose, but almost as obvious would pit the TouchPad against the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1. Boring, boring, boring! (Incidentally, typing the word "boring" three times in a row doesn't preclude us from making the two aforementioned theoretical comparisons in the future.)

The tablet market is growing beyond Google or Apple-based devices, so we thought … Read more

How many devices can a smartphone, tablet replace?

Does the iPhone obviate a standalone digital camera or the need for a landline phone? How fungible is a MacBook or GPS device? Those are questions I wrestle with, and they are questions that a recent survey provide some feedback on.

It is almost axiomatic now to say that smartphones have become the digital equivalent of a Swiss Army Knife. And like that venerable knife, a smartphone fits in your pocket and goes with you anywhere. That combination of instant accessibility and utility means it replaces the standalone digital and video camera in many instances.

Certainly that's the case … Read more

At retailers, iPad faces new foes

The tablet era has arrived at big-box retailers, which are now setting aside large swaths of floor space previously devoted to traditional PCs.

Best Buy is probably the highest-profile example of this trend. At U.S. stores, it has overhauled--or is in the process of overhauling--display areas. Tablets like the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1, Motorola Xoom, and Hewlett-Packard TouchPad now get prominent placement at stores, rendering the iPad just one among equals.

This is all part of Best Buy's "Tablet Central" strategy. Here's how Bill Seymour, vice president of investor relations at Best Buy, explained … Read more

Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 4G now up for preorder

The 4G-capable Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 is now available for preorder.

Customers interested in buying the device can head to Verizon's Web site and preorder the 16GB or 32GB models for $529.99 and $629.99, respectively. To buy the device at those prices, however, consumers must enter into a two-year contract with Verizon.

Samsung's Android Honeycomb-based Galaxy Tab features a 10.1-inch display and a dual-core 1GHz processor. The device includes both a front- and rear-facing camera so users can snap photos and have video chats. Samsung currently offers a Wi-Fi-only version of the tablet for $499.99 and $599.99 for the 16GB and 32GB models, respectively.

Verizon's preorder offer is a little late. Earlier this month, Verizon announced that it would start offering preorders on the 4G-capable Galaxy Tab 10.1 on June 8.

According to Verizon, the 4G Galaxy Tab 10.1 will start shipping in four to six weeks.… Read more

After Apple, Samsung, Acer vie for No. 2 tablet spot

After undisputed tablet market leader Apple, Samsung and Acer are vying for the No. 2 tablet slot worldwide, according to market researcher DisplaySearch.

While Apple shipped about 4.7 million 10-inch class tablets last quarter, Samsung is shaping up to be the closest competitor at about 850,000 units shipped worldwide in the same quarter, according to Richard Shim of DisplaySearch, which pegs its numbers to vendors' public statements.

Close on Samsung's heels is Acer. The new kid on the block, Acer appears to be making gains with its 10.1-inch Iconia Tab A500 tablet. Acer has shipped 800,… Read more

Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 review: Best Android tablet so far

I posted a full review of the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 last week. Today, the tablet finally goes on sale nationwide. On Thursday, I posted a comparison blog and video featuring the Tab 10.1 and the iPad 2.

Sure, that's a lot of coverage, but what do you expect for what some highly astute individuals are calling the iPad 2 of Honeycomb tablets? The Tab 10.1 is the closest any other vendor has come to matching Apple's thin, elegant iPad 2 design.

Also, the device is one of the first to use Samsung's new … Read more
