Saab: A history in pictures and video

Within the last week, Dutch manufacturer Spyker Cars completed its acquisition of the Swedish Saab brand from General Motors--a deal that's been in the works for quite a while now. And so it seems that Saab has a new lease on life in the automotive world, but exactly what that future is or how it will pan out is a topic of mere speculation. It has been said that often times one must know about the past to understand the future, and with this credo I present today's video--a tribute to the rich history of Saab brand automobiles.… Read more

Saab lives on

Spyker Cars announced today that it finalized a deal with GM to buy the Saab brand, including all intellectual property, facilities, and infrastructure. Spyker will pay GM $74 million for Saab, with $50 million due February 15, and the balance on July 15 of this year. The deal requires Saab to acquire a loan of 400 million Euro, which the Swedish government has already agreed to back.

Spyker Car will change its name to Saab Spyker Automobiles N.V.

This deal caused Saab to halt its winding-down process, and resume plans to produce the new 9-5.

An early burial for Hummer

I was reading an Associated Press article recently about all the soon-to-be-defunct product lines produced by General Motors: Pontiac, Saab, and Saturn. But another brand that's been on the way out for a while now was making headlines again, as GM looks all set in its selling off the Hummer brand to China-based Sichuan Tengzhong Heavy Industrial Machinery Corporation. While it's not official yet, unless something goes awry it looks to be a done deal and GM will have washed their hands of the tanking SUV line.

With General Motors metaphorically taking its Hummer brand out to the … Read more

A tribute and a eulogy for Saab

As you probably know by now, General Motors has decided to discontinue producing the Saab brand after failing to make a sell to European manufacturers Spyker and Koenigsegg Group. Whether it's a lack of resources to produce the Saab brand, or just general disinterest in doing so, GM is about to swing the axe on the Saab imprint, and soon there will be no more Saab.

I have never found Saab to be anything to do cartwheels about, but there are many European car aficionados who appreciate the subtle beauty of Saab over the years, and this Web video … Read more

Something to Saab about: GM shuts down European brand

Tonight most of us will be counting down to the birth of the new year, 2010. However, it appears that General Motors will be counting down to the last Saab produced by the company, as it was announced a couple of weeks ago that the automotive manufacturer will be discontinuing the making of the Saab imprint because of its inability to sell the line to prospective European carmakers. As it appears, nothing will be changing on this front prior to the self-imposed deadline of December 31, 2009, and it seems all but certain now that the Saab car and name … Read more

Struggling Saab finds partner on electric vehicles

Lithium-ion battery manufacturer Boston-Power and Swedish automaker Saab are collaborating on a zero emissions version of the Saab 9-3, both companies announced Wednesday.

The ZE Saab 9-3 (ZE for zero emissions) would be an all electric vehicle with a Boston-Power battery.

Many may wonder why Boston-Power would get involved with the struggling, for-sale Saab. But for the Massachusetts-based battery manufacturer, which has been trying to get into transportation batteries, the partnership makes sense, considering its associations.

In January 2009, Boston-Power received $55 million in series D funding from a group led by Foundation Asset Management, the investment arm of a … Read more

2011 Saab 9-5: The last hurrah?

A week before the Los Angeles Auto Show, GM's deal to sell Saab to Koenigsegg fell through, making the Swedish carmaker's future uncertain. But the company's plans for a future that might never come are evident in the 2011 9-5 sedan. This car incorporates much of the jet fighter design Saab used in its Aero-X concept from a few years ago. The pillars and roof of the 9-5 have a more angular design than previous Saabs, yet still maintain the Saab identity.

Saab also modernized the technology in the 9-5, going to a hard-drive-based navigation system and … Read more

Saab to get '11 crossover built by GM

DETROIT -- General Motors will follow through on plans to provide U.S. Saab dealers with a new crossover, assuming a deal to sell the automaker to a small Swedish company is completed.

The 9-4X will be launched in the 2011 model year and will replace the 9-7X, says Steve Shannon, GM's executive director of product and marketing for Cadillac, Hummer and Saab.

Meanwhile, on June 12, GM sent new dealership agreements to owners of Saab's 220 U.S. dealerships.

Under the agreement, the dealerships would continue selling vehicles under the new owner, a consortium led by tiny … Read more
