Podcasts gets a little better, still not the best

Editors' note: This review was updated March 25, 2013, with information on how to subscribe to third-party podcasts.

Apple's Podcasts (for both iPhone and iPad) gives you a standalone app that lets you subscribe to, play, and discover podcasts from any category. The app got off to a very shaky start with several missing features, but a new update might give podcast fans some relief.

The Podcasts interface is easy to navigate. You have a Store button in the upper left where you can search the iTunes App Store for podcasts by category, most popular, and other criteria (the … Read more

RadioShack slashes prices on Galaxy S3, iPhone 5 and 4S

With Samsung's Galaxy S4 unveiled last week and rumors of an iPhone 5S on the way, RadioShack is letting loose some of its inventory at a discounted price.

The consumer electronics store is offering deals on the Samsung Galaxy S3, iPhone 5, and iPhone 4S to Sprint customers starting today. A RadioShack spokesperson told CNET that this sale will last between now and April 4.

Of the three devices, the best deal seems to be for the Galaxy S3. With a new two-year contract, customers can save $150 on the device. Typically the mobile phone costs $199.99 at … Read more

Viral video star sues Apple over sample sold on iTunes

A viral video star has sued Apple over the sale of a track put on iTunes that sampled her catchphrase.

Kimberly Wilkins, who goes by the nickname "Sweet Brown," filed a complaint against the tech giant as well as local radio stations earlier this month, reports NewsOK.

Wilkins garnered Internet fame for her appearance in an on-the-scene TV interview about a local apartment fire last year, which included her saying, "Ain't nobody got time for that."

Some sampling from that interview was turned into a song called "I got bronchitis" that was sold … Read more

Apple's iRadio service said to be delayed into summer, or longer

Apple's long-rumored streaming music service won't be arriving until this summer, or later according to a new report.

Citing sources, The New York Times says that Apple's still wrangling with Sony over licensing rights, adding delay to the service that Apple had originally aimed to launch last month. Those people now believe that negotiations will be sorted out in time for a launch this summer, or later in the year.

The report goes on to say that the service was being designed to come preinstalled on Apple's devices instead of an additional app that needed downloading … Read more

Big Blue, Big Bang, big data: Telescope funds computing R&D

HANOVER, Germany -- IBM is trying to advance supercomputing technology in processing, optical communications, and memory in conjunction with an international project to peer at the Big Bang's radio remnants.

The radio telescope, called the Square Kilometer Array (SKA), will be built from 2016 to 2024 in southern Africa and Australia. Before that, though, IBM is working to develop the necessary computing technology through a five-year partnership with the Netherlands Institute for Radio Astronomy (Astron). At the CeBIT show here, the two groups are showing off some of the fruits of the cooperation, called Dome.

The idea is to … Read more

Listen to music on your Android device with iRadio

Listening to the radio on the radio is a thing of the past. Apps like iHeartRadio and TuneIn have made it easy and downright enjoyable to listen via your smartphone or tablet. iRadio would probably like to be the mentioned in the same breath as those apps. However, its dismal performance makes it tough to even consider it a worthwhile alternative.

Once it's installed, the app is still fundamentally useless until you add all of iRadio's predetermined stations. When you try, you're greeted with a never-ending loading bar. Trying to load stations crashed the app twice during … Read more

Run, dodge, jump, and slide in Angry Gran RadioActive Run

If a mobile character gets popular, you can expect a running game with it to not be far behind. Angry Gran RadioActive Run drops mobile favorite Angry Gran into a side-scroller, trying to dodge radioactive elements. The game is a decent time-waster and a little addictive, but the out-of-control ads and difficulty suck the limited amount of fun out of it.

Accidental ads taps abound in this app, as ads are almost always bigger on the screen than the actual buttons you want to hit. The only place this isn't true is when you're actually playing the running … Read more
