Porsche's new 911 defies traditionalists

Those familiar with past 911s will notice something missing in the cabin of the 2012 911 Carrera S -- the emergency brake lever no longer sticks up from the console. Instead, a switch by your left knee activates an electronic parking brake.

The console now plays host to an array of buttons activating sport modes, active exhaust, and damper stiffening. In my opinion, these buttons are more accessible, and look much better, than the tiny plastic buttons that used to sit below the navigation screen.

Of greater loss to the traditionalists is hydraulic power steering, replaced by an electrically boosted … Read more

Porsche to birth a tiger

The Porsche design department apparently spends most of its time thinking up names for new models, rather than coming up with a new look for the 911, as evidenced by its announcement today that a new, small SUV, going into production next year, will be called the Macan. Previously, Porsche was toying with the name Cajun for this car.

A good portion of the world will have a similar reaction as it had when Volkswagen came out with the Touareg, as in "wha?". But Indonesians may jump up when they hear the name, saying "Macan?! Where?", … Read more

QNX demos mobile app platform in cloud-connected Porsche

LAS VEGAS--It's the classic show formula: put your product in the hands of an attractive model and people will look twice. In the case of QNX's new mobile app platform, the attractive model is the Porsche Carrera sports car.

2012 Porsche Cayman R: Lightweight and high tech

The Porsche Cayman R was the best handling car I drove since the Lotus Evora S.

If you were only to look at the Cayman R's specs, you would miss that essential Porsche magic that has made devotees of many drivers. The car feels light, making it easily responsive to steering and accelerator inputs. A very rigid body keeps the tires in contact with the pavement. Its handling proves a combination of engineering and art.

Further engineering finesse comes in the engine, producing 330 horsepower but still able to boast a 27 mpg highway number. It makes you wonder … Read more

The 2012 Porsche 911 will be bigger, but will that mean less of a good thing?

2013 Porsche Panamera GTS: The track sedan

LOS ANGELES--More power and a lowered ride height make this the performance Panamera.

Porsche has a knack for slotting cars into very specific niches. The Panamera GTS, unveiled at the 2011 Los Angeles Auto Show, is the Porsche sedan for the track.

That is not to say the Panamera 4S or S would not excel when banged around a road course, but Porsche designed the GTS to beat both of them. Thirty more horsepower eked out of the same engine gives it a power edge, and Porsche includes many of its performance options as standard in the GTS.
