Polaroid SC1630 Android-powered cam pops up in video

LAS VEGAS--Polaroids! Remember them?

Back in the old days, instant photography meant Polaroid, but nowadays every photo is instant--and it doesn't get much more instant than a cameraphone zapping your snap to Facebook and Twitter within seconds of taking it. Which is where the new Android-powered Polaroid SC1630 comes in, in our lovely video from CES.

Polaroid first with Android camera. Does it matter?

LAS VEGAS--Polaroid gets first bragging rights to a camera running Android.

The SC1630 looks like a phone, but incorporates a 16-megapixel sensor and a 3x zoom lens, and uses Wi-Fi (or, at extra cost, cellular) for uploading to Facebook, Twitter, and Tumblr.

The real question, however, is who is this for? I keep going in circles on it. Is it the camera equivalent of the iPod Touch, which is pretty much the iPhone without the phone? Or is it just going to be an extra device that only offers the benefit of a zoom lens? What do you think?

I'll update with more details and pictures later, after I've touched it. No pricing yet.

Update, 11:10 a.m. PT: The Polaroid SC1630 will have a 36-108mm lens (no aperture specs), microSD, face detection, and onboard editing of course. Available this year. Still no price.… Read more

Crave giveaway: Polaroid Z340 Instant Digital Camera

If your New Year's resolutions include a vow to take more photos, you're in luck. If you're also resolving to incorporate more 1970s into your 2012, then your luck runneth over.

This week's prize, a Polaroid Z340 Instant Digital Camera, integrates a full-function 14-megapixel digicam with a Zink inkless printer that spits out 3x4-inch color prints on the go. Best of all for those who appreciate vintage chic, it looks a lot like its famed analog predecessor.

The Z340, which came out in November, costs $299.99 and gives you up to 25 prints on a battery charge. At almost 1.5 pounds, the device is a little on the heavy side, but sometimes that's the price you pay to bear the weight of retro-coolness.

So how do you try to win this week's prize? Let me enumerate the basic rules. Please read them carefully; there will be a test. Snap! … Read more

Polaroid Z340 Instant Digital Camera: Say cheese!

Polaroid instant cameras conjure up images of bell bottoms and avocado-colored appliances from the boom days of the 1970s. You can get in on the retro wave with the new Polaroid Z340 Instant Digital Camera.

The Z340 pretty much takes the original Polaroid concept and updates it. It's a 14MP camera with a 2.7-inch LCD display and an integrated printer that spits out 3x4-inch color prints.

The printer part uses inkless printing technology from Zink Imaging. The special Zink paper has embedded dye crystals with a polymer overcoat for protection. Heat activates the crystals to form the image.… Read more

Lytro: What really makes it revolutionary

Those cameras that everyone calls point-and-shoots? For years, they've involved a lot more than pointing and shooting. They give you different settings for portraits, low-light situations and sports shots. You can turn the flash on or off. You get to choose the resolution and image quality. You can capture in HDR. Most models let you burrow into endless manual settings if you want precise control. Did I mention you can record video?

And then there's Lytro's camera, which was revealed yesterday at a press event led by founder Ren Ng. We already knew that the Silicon … Read more

Facebook plans artsy photo filters? Groan

I'm probably going against the will of the people here, but I sighed heavily this morning when I read in The New York Times that Facebook plans to release filters to give photos artsy effects.

You know what I'm talking about--the shots with the heavily darkened corners that old cameras produced, the desaturated colors from faded Polaroids, the sepia tones and cyanotype blues from 19th-century photography techniques, the wacky hues when one type of film was processed with another type's chemistry, the smeary Vaseline-on-the-lens look of old portraits.

There's nothing intrinsically wrong with this kind of … Read more

Little Photo is huge on features

Contrary to its name, Little Photo for Android is huge on features. With an impressive list of filters and tools, and a seemingly infinite number of combinations to apply, Little Photo is an awesomely powerful camera app for your mobile device.

Open up the app, and either activate the camera, or load up an existing photo from your gallery. If you choose to take a new photo, you can either snap as you tap or enable a 3-second timer. From there, you'll be jetted over to the work space, where you can scroll through pages of effects to apply … Read more

Lady Gaga, Polaroid make mobile printers sexy again

We will soon find out if people will buy anything related to Lady Gaga, as her collaboration with Polaroid is coming to fruition. The artist's Polaroid Grey Label line, announced at CES 2011, includes an instant camera, sunglasses that shoot and display photos and video, and the GL10 Instant Mobile Printer.
