For those end-of-quarter, highly stressful days...

This week has been highly stressful. Actually, every end of quarter has been stressful. My company has yet to miss a quarter in eight straight quarters, but that doesn't mean it's always a pleasant experience, whatever I might say to the contrary.

iRobot preps pared-down PackBot for civilians

iRobot announced a new addition to its lineup of industrial robots Wednesday.

The Negotiator, another tactical mobile robot that can climb stairs, seems to be a pared down, civilian version of the PackBot.

Like the PackBot, the Negotiator can climb stairs, work by remote control, and be outfitted with tools for reconnaissance and chemical detection.

iRobot already offers a version of the PackBot 510 with a kit for first responders. While some municipalities have adopted it, the PackBot hasn't exactly become a common sight at your local police station.

When Yahoo says no, it means yes

Yes, I know Yahoo rejected Microsoft's bid of $31 per share. But that's just standard negotiating strategy in the world of mergers and acquisitions.

Sure, Microsoft's offer - a 60% premium over the price of Yahoo's stock at the time - was designed, not only to get Yahoo's board's attention, but to back them into a corner. If no other suitors emerge - as I predicted in a prior post - it's an offer Yahoo's board can't refuse without risking shareholder litigation or revolt.

But that doesn't mean Microsoft didn't leave itself any wiggle room, and Yahoo's board knows that.
