Latest iOS jailbreak dubbed the most popular ever

Just days after its release, one of the most high-profile iOS jailbreaks turns out to be the fastest to be adopted too.

Evasi0n, which gives iPhone, iPod, and iPad owners deeper access to the software on their devices than Apple allows, has been downloaded and used by nearly 7 million people since its release on Monday, Forbes reports.

To put that figure in perspective, Apple last month said that it had sold more than 500 million iOS devices cumulatively, and that 300 million of those were running iOS 6 -- its latest major release.

The 7 million tally comes from … Read more

iOS 6.1.1 doesn't break evasi0n jailbreak, at least not yet

The evasi0n jailbreak is so far safe from the clutches of iOS 6.1.1.

Released by Apple to developers yesterday, the first beta of the iOS update tweaks Apple's Maps app for Japanese users but otherwise is light on changes. And as tweeted by iOS hacker pod2g, the beta does not block the evasi0n jailbreak, as some feared it might. However, he cautioned people who want to install the evasi0n jailbreak to stick with iOS 6.1.

6.1.1 beta (10B311) does not fix the jailbreak. It'll probably happen in a future revision. Don't upgrade … Read more

Evasi0n iOS jailbreak version 1.1 pops up with bug fixes

The evasi0n jailbreak team is already out with a new version that resolves a couple of persistent glitches.

Available from the evasi0n Web site, version 1.1 fixes one problem of long reboot times for any jailbroken device, according to blog site iPodnn. It also squashes a bug that caused the default Weather app to crash.

Both fixes had been posted earlier on the Cydia app store for jailbreakers, the evasi0n team tweeted today. Users who've already jailbroken their devices can grab the fixes from Cydia rather than installing the new version of evasi0n from scratch. People trying out … Read more

iOS evasi0n jailbreak used 1.7 million times in first day

A new jailbreak that targets all of the latest iOS devices has proven a hit with the public.

Launched on Monday, the evasi0n tool is capable of jailbreaking every iOS 6 and 6.1 device on the market, including the iPhone 5, the iPad Mini, the fourth-generation iPad, and the fifth-generation iPod Touch. The tool itself is considered relatively simple to use, certainly in comparison with other jailbreak methods.

As a result, evasi0n had already been used at least 800,000 times in its initial six hours, according to Jay Freeman, who runs the Cydia app store for jailbreakers. Speaking … Read more

Apple warns against jailbreaking following evasi0n hack

Apple has tweaked an online article about the dangers of jailbreaking in the wake of a recent hack of iOS code.

The article shows a last-modified date of Sunday, the same day the evasi0n jailbreak tool for iOS 6.0 through 6.1 was due to reach the public. The tool didn't actually pop up until Monday, but the timing of the modified article certainly points to concern on Apple's part.

Exactly what was updated in Apple's article is difficult to know. But the company cites a range of hazards that it associates with jailbreaking, including instability, … Read more

How to jailbreak any iOS 6 device, including iPhone 5

If you've been waiting to jailbreak your iPhone 5, or any device running iOS 6 and higher, today is your lucky day. A new tool called evasi0n was released just this morning.

The new tool is very simple to use -- in fact, it's easier to use than the iOS 5.1.1 jailbreak tool I covered last year. Taking far less time, and only a few steps, if you're comfortable clicking a few buttons on your computer and tapping an icon on your iOS device, you're more than prepared to use evasi0n.

The Mini's 4:3 aspect ratio was cited by users as less than ideal for watching movies, which are typically better served by a screen with a 16:9 ratio. The small tablet … Read more

Russia abandons proposal for U.N. governance of Internet

A Russian-led coalition has withdrawn a controversial proposal to turn Internet governance over to a United Nations agency, a plan opposed by Western governments during ongoing talks over an international communications treaty.

The proposal, supported by China, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, and others, would have called on the U.N. to help member states seize control of key Internet engineering assets, including domain names, addresses, and numbering. The United States, Canada, France, Sweden, and others opposed the proposal, fearing that it could do grave harm to the current free and open Internet.

The U.N. agency, called the … Read more

U.N. confab puts focus on control of the Internet

Today in Dubai, an 11-day meeting begins that may result in an Internet-regulation proposal standstill.

The U.N. conference will be centered on updating telecommunications codes, including global communications cooperation, but concerns are growing within a U.S. delegation that plans to oppose U.N. proposals which may impose further controls on Internet commerce and communication.

However, the 123-member strong U.S. group joins envoys from tech firms including Google and Microsoft, who express concern that potential security oversights could also be exploited by nations -- including Russia and China -- to justify the next step on the Internet control … Read more

Deliver chopped garlic with a twist

Perhaps more so than any other single fruit, vegetable, or herb, garlic gets its own dedicated gadgets. It should probably not come as much of a surprise that garlic has demanded so much attention. After all, the pungent little cloves do tend to stand out amongst everything that they come in contact with. Yet, we cannot seem to stay away from the species Allium sativum even if we try. However, we can avoid touching it.
