Hands-on with iOS 4

Apple's iOS 4 was released today ahead of the launch of the iPhone 4, which becomes available June 24. iPhone users can update to the latest OS via iTunes, but some features will not be available for the iPhone 3G and the update is not available at all for the original iPhone. iOS 4 will not be available on the iPad until this fall.

Apple says there are more than 100 new features in iOS 4, but the most notable tweaks include multitasking, with handy controls for switching apps; home screen folders that you can name by category for … Read more

WebOS notifications designer leaves Palm for Apple

The man behind the notification system used in Palm's WebOS is ditching his future HP overlords for iPhone central in Cupertino.

The blog PreCentral saw on Rich Dellinger's LinkedIn page that he was moving from Palm to Apple, and according to his Twitter, it appears he started on June 1. Dellinger worked at Apple from 1999 to 2006, back before the original iPhone and its iOS was made public. He returns to Apple as a senior user interface designer. It's not clear what he'll be working on, but it's easy to assume his expertise in … Read more

The 404 556: Where we finally finally finally get multitasking (podcast)

It's been a long, single-tasking journey but Apple finally released OS 4 for the iPhone, and one of the key upgrades includes the ability to multitask. Took you long enough, Darth Jobs! Developers and users will now have the ability to run multiple applications at once, and Apple also demonstrated the Skype app running in the background (does that mean the next-gen iPhone will have a forward-facing camera?) as well as streaming audio apps like Pandora and Last.fm. Apple also unveiled folders for the iPhone that makes it easy to organize all your apps into customizable categories.

Unfortunately, not all of our prayers were answered in this latest update. The iPhone still can't go into mass storage mode, it can't tether to a computer, no Flash support or FM radio, and of course, the biggest issue is that it's still exclusively on the unreliable AT&T network. Wilson was hoping for Wi-Fi syncing but apparently Apple makes too much money on selling iPhone cables to worry about wireless.

Big thanks to everyone for pointing us to CheckFacebook.com that answers yesterday's question about the percentage of Americans on the site. Unsurprisingly, the U.S. has the highest number of FB users at 94,748,820, with the U.K. at a not-so-close second. Also be sure to listen carefully during E-Mails From the Public to learn how to say "Facebook" in Chinese!

iPhone OS: Soon considered a computer OS?

With Thursday's announcement/town hall demo of iPhone OS 4, a few more gripes about Apple's growing OS and software platform were erased. Multitasking, organized app folders, and more robust e-mail joined the fold, adding to the usability of any iPhone, iPod Touch, or eventually iPad, and closing the gap just a little bit more.

What gap? Why, the gap between our conceptions of what a smartphone or tablet is versus a traditional computer.

Last year, universal search and held-back tools like cut and paste may have been available on other smartphones, but the iPhone benefitted greatly from … Read more

Poll: What iPhone OS 4 feature do you want most?

Tomorrow's the big day: At 10 a.m. (PT) Thursday, Apple will give the world a sneak peek at iPhone OS 4. Exciting, no?

Earlier today, CNET's Erica Ogg offered her take on what's in store for OS 4, including both expected additions like multitasking and longshots like Flash support.

Once you've digested all that, think about the one new feature you really, really want: the thing you're wishin' and hopin' and prayin' for. In other words, if Apple announced only one big improvement to the OS, you'd want it to be...this.

Once again this year, we've had it with April Fool's jokes. Except for one. You'll see. If you're more tired of iPad than you are of April Fool's, skip the first half of the show where we recap other people's reviews since Apple refuses to give us an iPad early. Also, we debunk Microsoft's claims that Chrome is fundamentally insecure, which almost ought to be a joke.
