Hewlett-Packard said today it would eliminate 27,000 jobs as part of CEO Meg Whitman's plan to restructure the bellwether technology giant and cut costs.
The job cuts represent 8 percent of HP's work force, and would be completed by the end of fiscal 2014, the company said today.
In addition, HP will reduce expenses by streamlining its supply chain, narrowing its product portfolio, simplifying its market strategy, and improving its standard business practices. Hewlett-Packard has a line of products ready to go for Windows 8, CEO Meg Whitman said today during the company's earnings conference call.
"We have a product line lined up in PSG (Personal Systems Group) on Windows on X86. We believe we're going to be well-positioned for holiday on Windows 8 X86," she said. X86 refers to the chip design that Intel and Advanced Micro Devices use.
Whitman made no mention of ARM, the other chip technology that Windows 8 will run on.

For Hewlett-Packard, fiscal 2011 was the year of two CEOs--Leo Apotheker and Meg Whitman--and it cost the company dearly.
In its proxy statement filed today, HP outlined the compensation packages for its relatively new CEO and the parting gift for Apotheker.

After Hewlett-Packard reported earnings today, CEO Meg Whitman said that the Googles and Facebooks of the world are coming to HP to get servers because of the dearth of hard disk drives.
Whitman was responding to a question from an analyst during today's earnings conference call about companies like Google and Facebook building their own servers and not getting them from the traditional sources--PC makers like HP and Dell.

Despite reports that Hewlett-Packard was nearing an announcement regarding plans for its WebOS business, Meg Whitman is still undecided.
The company was reportedly expected to reveal the fate of its troubled mobile operating system this evening, but HP's recently installed chief executive officer told a company-wide meeting that a decision would not come for at least a few more weeks, according to a report on The Verge.
"It's really important to me to make the right decision, not the fast decision," Whitman reportedly told a room full of Palm and HP employees. "If HP decides to do this [to keep WebOS], we're going to do it in a very significant way over a multi year period."

Hewlett-Packard has made its first major executive hire under new CEO Meg Whitman.
The company announced today that it's hired John Hinshaw to fill the new role of executive vice president for global technology and business processes. That long title means he'll oversee the information technology and administrative groups, be responsible for procuring services, and manage all of the company's business processes.
Reporting directly to Whitman, Hinshaw will join HP on November 15 and also take a seat on the executive council.
