Panasonic announces Lumix DMC-FZ47 megazoom

One of the things that bugged me about Panasonic's Lumix DMC-FZ40 was its noticeably slower performance in comparison with its linemate, the FZ100. That apparently changes with its update, the Lumix FZ47.

Instead of using the same plain ol' 14-megapixel CCD, Panasonic swapped in one of its 12-megapixel high-speed CCD sensors and backed it with its Venus Engine FHD processor. This combo, which is also in the rugged Lumix TS3, allows it to shoot at up to 3.7 frames per second at full resolution and record full HD video in AVCHD. Panasonic also promises faster start-up and response … Read more

Panasonic Lumix DMC-FH27 camera review: Simple, satisfying, and a solid value

There are a lot of people out there who simply want an affordable camera that takes a decent picture in auto, has some extra zoom power, and can still be slipped in a pocket. The Panasonic Lumix DMC-FH27 is just that. It is what I consider a good walking-around camera, something you just stick in your pocket and use when you're out for the day and want to be able to capture some moments here and there.

With camera manufacturers trying to jam in as many features as possible in some models, the FH27 is notable for having only … Read more

Panasonic Lumix DMC-TS3 camera review: get wet, take pictures

The Panasonic Lumix DMC-TS3 is the manufacturer's third shot at a high-end rugged camera. (It's the fourth if you include the more budget-friendly DMC-TS10.) The price continues to hover just south of the $400 mark, but Panasonic has again bulked up the feature set and durability claims.

The big add-in feature this time is GPS, which makes perfect sense for a rugged camera. After all, it's tough to mark down where you were when you took a picture when there are no street signs. The TS3 is just slightly more durable than its predecessor, the TS2, being … Read more

Panasonic announces Lumix FH7 ultracompact

If the only thing stopping you from buying a Panasonic Lumix DMC-FH5 was its lack of a touch screen, you're in luck. Along with the announcement of the considerably more interesting Lumix DMC-G3, Panasonic announced the FH7, a 16-megapixel ultracompact with a 3-inch touch screen.

The photo above spells out all its features for you, but if you want to read more about it, you can hit up Panasonic's global site (which is ridiculously better than the U.S. site).

No release date or pricing was announced, but since the FH5 is $150, I'd put the FH7 … Read more

Panasonic Lumix DMC-ZS8 review: Good camera, questionable value

If you walked into a store and saw Panasonic's Lumix DMC-ZS8 and its Lumix DMC-ZS10 next to each other, you might not immediately see the differences, let alone $100 worth of them. Even after picking them up, you might notice only that the ZS10 has a GPS receiver and a touch screen. And a stereo mic. Oh, and look, it records full HD video in AVCHD with a one-touch record button.

But if none of that matters to you, then maybe the more hidden differences will, like the fact that the ZS10's screen is twice the resolution of … Read more

Panasonic shows next-gen 3D TVs, ups its streaming game

LAS VEGAS--Panasonic's press conferences aren't known to be all that scintillating, but the good news this year is that the Japanese electronics giant kept things relatively short.

As expected, we got to hear about second-generation 3D TVs and, as usual, several new digital-imaging and home theater-products were announced, many of them featuring some 3D angle.

Perhaps most interesting was the company's decision to rename its Viera Cast streaming media platform Viera Connect. The rechristening was part of a concerted effort of the company to build out its smart TV platform. One of the demos included Gameloft CEO … Read more

Quick Take: Panasonic Lumix DMC-ZS6

CNET did not review the Panasonic Lumix DMC-ZS6, but we did review the Panasonic Lumix DMC-ZS5 and the DMC-ZS7, which are very similar.

The ZS6 is essentially the ZS5 in the body of the ZS7. The advantages of the ZS6 over the ZS5 include a stereo mic for movie recordings, a Mini-HDMI output for direct playback on an HDTV or monitor, and a 3-inch 460K-pixel display. The ZS6's lens, image processor, and sensor are the same for the ZS5, and as such we expect the ZS6's shooting performance and photo quality to be the same as the ZS5'… Read more

Lumix--as much a camera as a phone

Panasonic has taken the wraps off its Lumix Phone at Ceatec 2010.

The Lumix Phone site now displays the design of this handset with a slide-out keypad and shows off sample photos taken using the device's 13.2-megapixel shooter.

Aside from the specs that Panasonic revealed last week, a few other details have emerged. It has a flash and the lens is widest at 27mm. Similar to a standalone camera, the lens is multicoated to reduce flare. Another feature is Panasonic's picture Jump technology for easy sharing of photos. Like the company's Lumix line of compact digital … Read more
