Red Hat testing virtualization lineup

Red Hat has begun beta-testing its new line of virtualization products based on Qumranet's KVM hypervisor.

The tests are the next stage in development of the Red Hat Enterprise Virtualization (RHEV) lineup, which was announced by the company in February. The RHEV portfolio includes a standalone hypervisor, RHEV-H, as well as virtualization managers for servers and desktops. In its announcement earlier this year, Red Hat said the products would be made available within the following 18 months, which sets a deadline of August 2010.

"We are in a unique position to deliver a comprehensive portfolio of virtualization solutions, … Read more

Red Hat to VMware: Our virtualization rocks, yours stinks

As if VMware didn't already have enough problems, Red Hat has gone on the offensive, claiming that its new Qumranet virtualization software outperforms VMware's ESX in a number of key areas, as The Register reports. Specifically, Red Hat claims that its KVM software:

Runs five virtual machines (VMs) for every three that VMware's ESX can run on the same physical hardware; Tops out at 52 VMs on a physical server while ESX can only manage 35, and Citrix gives in at 30.

I haven't seen any independent benchmarks, but if these claims are true than proprietary … Read more

Red Hat makes buy for KVM--but VDI too

Last week's big virtualization news was Red Hat's purchase of Qumranet for $107 million.

By way of brief background, Qumranet has two overlapping, but somewhat independent, technology sets. The first--for which it is probably best known--is KVM, an open-source hypervisor that is in the process of being added to the Linux kernel. The other is its SolidICE virtual desktop solution that uses a back-end Linux server (virtualized with KVM) connecting to clients with the company's own Simple Protocol for Independent Computing Environments (SPICE) protocol. The virtual desktops themselves can be Windows, as well as Linux.

Iogear's KVM switch does more than control computer

Iogear introduced on Monday the first KVM Switch that enables control of a second computer using your laptop--the USB Laptop KVM Switch.

For those who are not familiar with this type of device, KVM stands for keyboard, video, and mouse. A KVM switch is a device that allows for working directly with more than one computer via only one set of KVM and therefore keeping the work space free from clutter, and saving energy as well as money. This is only applicable to situations where you don't need to directly interact with all of the involved computers at the … Read more

A new virtualizer for Red Hat

I spent the past couple of days at the Red Hat Summit in Boston. Good-sized crowd--over 1,500 and more than Red Hat expected I gather. The two major topics that I found most interesting at the event were Real-Time Linux and embedded KVM-based virtualization. I'll cover Real-Time in a future post; here's my take on Red Hat's KVM announcement.

CNET News.com's Andrew Donoghue has more details, but basically Red Hat is releasing--into beta test--a small (< 64 MB) standalone hypervisor based on the KVM project. The idea is that users (or system makers) will … Read more

Ubuntu picks KVM over Xen for virtualization

Heading in a different direction from its main rivals, Ubuntu Linux will use KVM as its primary virtualization software.

Red Hat Enterprise Linux and Novell's Suse Linux Enterprise Server both use the Xen virtualization software, a "hypervisor" layer that lets multiple operating systems run on the same computer. In contrast, the KVM software runs on top of a version of Linux, the "host" operating system that provides a foundation for other "guest" operating systems to run in a virtual mode.

"We've chosen to settle on KVM as our main virtualization focus,&… Read more

Qumranet reveals reason for all that KVM work

Update: I corrected the CEO's name spelling.

Given how much time and money it sunk into KVM, the Linux-based, open-source virtualization project, it's not a surprise that that stealth-mode start-up Qumranet was working on virtualization. But until Monday, the company refused to say just exactly how.

At DemoFall 2007, Qumranet unveiled its strategy: software that makes it easier to run desktop PCs on central servers rather than on actual PCs. Others, notably market leader VMware, already have a start in that market, but Qumranet aims to make it possible by buying software from one company rather than hiring … Read more
