New Facebook app designed to thwart hackers

Facebook users can lean on a new app to help them fight spam and malware.

Designed by a team of students at the University of California at Riverside, MyPageKeeper is a free Facebook app that continually monitors wall posts and news feeds for malicious content. If the app suspects that any content may contain spam or malware, it alerts you and gives you the ability to remove it.

Beyond protecting your own Facebook account, it can also protect the accounts of friends who may get infected by viruses or hit by spam just by viewing your page.

The app was … Read more

Free apps to get fit and lose weight

When it comes to getting fit or losing weight, there's no shortage of books, blogs, diets, workout videos, or group exercise classes to help you out.

Now, tech fiends can add another category of helpful resources: mobile apps. Androids and iPhones both have a large selection of exercise and weight loss apps, but how do you chose among them all?

To help you reach your fitness or weight loss goals faster, I found the most interactive, effective, and fun apps available. Here are three of the best, free apps for Android and iOS to help you get in shape (in no particular order):

RunKeeper (iPhone, Android): This free app lets you track your outdoor activities like hiking, jogging, and running.… Read more

Simple, secure data storage

Keeper Desktop is a quick and easy way for users to store passwords, account numbers, and other sensitive information securely on their computers. With an intuitive interface and strong encryption, Keeper Desktop is a great way to keep your information both safe and accessible.

The program's interface is sleek and well organized, and we found it quite easy to create a master password and then start adding new account information. The program has a random username and password generator, which is handy if you want to create a new, more secure log-in for any of your accounts. Accessing the … Read more

Powerful encryption program

SecuKeeper is a sleek and intuitive program that offers users multiple ways to keep their files safe from prying eyes. Its many features make it a good choice for protecting sensitive information.

The program's interface is attractive and intuitive, and first-time users should have no trouble getting started. Our main complaint about the program is that despite its professional appearance, the text throughout the interface is poorly written. It's not incomprehensible, but it's obvious that English is not the first language of whoever wrote it, and this detracts from the user experience. The same is true of … Read more

Simple organizational tool

My Notes Keeper promises to help users stay organized by collecting the little bits of information we need to keep around but have a tendency to misplace. This program combines several useful tools, but offers nothing new.

My Notes Keeper has a very basic interface that, while cluttered with buttons and options, should not be a difficult to learn. It looks like a version of Microsoft Word, with some added options that most users will immediately recognize. The center holds a word-processing screen with familiar icons for saving, editing, and customizing the text. The biggest change is a file tree … Read more

Offline browser stores research

Researchers or students will find this offline browser an easy-to-use tool for storing info from online sources: links, photos, and entire or partial Web pages. We ran into an odd glitch during our tests, but it didn't seem to affect CyberKeeper's performance in any way.

The program installs slowly, but once it's up and running, it launches an attractively designed interface and a floating toolbar that complements its features. (A further slowdown at installation will occur for those who will also need to install Microsoft .NET Framework 3.0 Service Pack, which is required for running this … Read more

Handy password keeper

Flying Bit Password keeper launches a compact but cleanly designed, user-friendly interface that makes organizing your passwords according to type a very simple matter. We liked especially how the interface's toolbar included an icon that made saving the utility to a USB drive or other removable device so simple.

In our tests, this free utility performed very well. It's simple enough that novice users will easily master it. The ability to organize passwords in the directory by function added to the utility's ease of use and usefulness. We liked the detail it provided for the items associated … Read more

The only one you'll need

This useful solution for password control unites disparate log-ins under the protection of an unlock code, encryption, and an optional master password. Autofill, the gem in the password manager's crown, was unfortunately broken in this version, so those wondering why a major feature is missing have not gone crazy.

Until the next version is released in a few short days, you can continue to enter log-in information for each site URL, and use a new password display feature to remind yourself of the log-on directly from the log-in window on 1Password's internal browser. Other changes and additions now … Read more

1Password makes Web log-ins portable

iPhone and iPod Touch users have a fantastic new solution for keeping track of log-in credentials from site to site. It's called 1Password, and like the name suggests, you only need to remember one password to access and use your log-ins across hundreds and thousands of sites.

Like RoboForm (download) and other desktop password solutions, 1Password lets you save these log-ins under the protection of a single master password. Unfortunately, due to the limitations of Apple's SDK, you can't run 1Password while you're randomly browsing in Safari, meaning you won't be able to enjoy the … Read more

Run Keeper uses GPS to track exercise, road trips

Exercise enthusiasts will love Run Keeper, an upcoming fitness tracker for the iPhone. It centers on a really simple tracker that follows your location as you run via GPS, then puts that information into a personal database.

Every time you complete a run you can see how far you went (to the best of the phone's tracking capabilities), along with the time spent and how it compares with previous runs, all on a Google Map.

Developer Jason Jacobs of FitnessKeeper tells us it's just the tip of the iceberg for planned development and that much bigger things are on the way. For people too cheap to shell out for Nike's iPod nano-centric run tracker this makes a viable alternative albeit with less integration with iTunes. Nice, however, is the option to check out your data from any computer since the maps and runs are stored in the cloud.

While Jacobs has designed the application for tracking runs, another viable use for this is tracking trips in vehicles. Businesses looking to keep an eye on their employees' short-haul trips could use such a system to make sure they're going where they said they did.

A video of the application in action is embedded after the break. No word on when this should be available in the app store.… Read more
