Three lessons from #Linsanity--so far

I know what my editor is thinking. "We hired this guy to blog about social and digital media, but for the second post in a row, he writes about a magazine cover?!?"

But just as my previous post about the "Loading..." cover of the New Yorker was about using digital artifacts in a print setting, the cover you see above represents the same thing.

In this case, Sports Illustrated's cover last week, featuring the #SILinsanity hashtag, a play on the regular #Linsanity hashtag, caught my eye. (Jeremy Lin is also on the cover this week, … Read more

'Linsanity' already hitting e-bookstores near you

Talk about fast to market.

In the wake of "Linsanity," the worldwide hype that's blown up over the last couple of weeks surrounding New York Knicks sensation Jeremy Lin, there are already at least seven books, all electronic, about basketball's instant star.

From biography to poetry to trivia to Sun Tzu Art of War-type advice, the books run the genre gamut. And all have one thing in common: they were written, edited, and published at breakneck speeds.

According to Digital Book World, one the titles, "Linsanity: The Improbable Rise of Jeremy Lin," by Alan Goldsher, was turned around in just 72 hours. … Read more

Zuckerberg turns up at home of Linsanity

It's a holiday weekend in America and, this week, the most important issue hasn't been the national debt or the dearth of novel political thought.

It's the entry of Jeremy Lin of the New York Knicks into the national consciousness.

Just this morning, ESPN announced that it had fired an online headline writer for offering this on Lin's first defeat as a starter: "Chink in the Armor."

And now, as I am torn between my affection for a former Golden State Warrior (most do better when they leave) and my fondness for the Cubans … Read more

Meet the FedEx math whiz who predicted Linsanity

Those who use numbers to define life frighten me. Especially when they're right.

How, then, might Ed Weiland be feeling this week when his numerical analysis-- one that no one believed-- came true over the last two weeks? Yes, this is man who had a feeling--no, a certainty-- that Linsanity was going to happen.

Should you have been an unusually devoted fan of the Charlotte Bobcats lately, you might not have noticed that the NBA has gone all Lin, all the time.

Jeremy Lin, the Harvard-educated Taiwanese-American, has brought things to the New York Knicks that were in short … Read more

Jeremy Lin crushing it as overnight Twitter star

"Can Jeremy Lin fix the Eurozone debt crisis?" "Who put sports in my Twitter again?" "Wow, just wow."

Wow, indeed.

Just some of the posts on Twitter as the twitterverse reacted to the most amazing--yes, the most amazing--rags-to-riches, feel-good sports story of the century. (One of the benefits of living in 2012 is that I can say that without starting too much of a bar fight).

The sudden emergence of the unheralded New York Knicks guard as the top sports story across the nation is predictably reflected on this Twitter stats page generated by … Read more

On the Web, latest 'Bourne' trailer goes boom

The Web is getting re-Bourne today. As in Jason Bourne.

NBC Universal released the trailer for the "Bourne Legacy," the latest installment in the popular "Bourne" film series. Not surprisingly, the film trailer has begun to light up Twitter and is quickly circulating on the Web, even though the movie isn't scheduled hit theaters for another six months.

Who could have guessed that stories about spies and government conspiracies that are well told and acted would strike a chord with the public?

Matt Damon, who has starred in the previous three Bourne films, is not … Read more

Yelp files for $100M IPO, aiming to prove doubters wrong

Yelp, the giant local-reviews network, filed today to raise as much as $100 million in an initial offering--one that, should it come off as planned, would allow the startup to boast it was right to spurn would-be suitors Google and Yahoo.

Yelp didn't disclose a target share price or a potential market cap valuation, which is par for the course in initial IPO filings. Fortune's Dan Primack notes that Yelp is reportedly seeking a valuation in the $1 billion to $2 billion range.

The IPO filing is a big, but long-expected move for Yelp, which was founded … Read more

Yelp reportedly getting closer to IPO

Yelp, the user-generated reviews site, has chosen Goldman Sachs and Citigroup to lead an initial public offering that could value the company at about $2 billion, according to The Wall Street Journal.

The startup hasn't been shy about its desire to tap into the equity markets, and Groupon's IPO last week has likely made Yelp executives more confident that they can have a successful offering. Others in the wings include Zynga, Angie's List and, the potential biggie of them all, Facebook.

The Journal says Yelp plans to file its IPO plans in the next few weeks with … Read more

BBC puts the brakes on TomTom, 'Top Gear' partnership

I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but those of you who got excited about the announcement of a "Top Gear"-edition GPS navigator by TomTom will be saddened to know that the brakes have been applied to the project.

According to the Guardian, the BBC states that its presenters "must take particular care not to endorse any product or service which could be covered in the programs on which they work." In a nutshell, because GPS navigators are car accessories and "Top Gear" is a show that reviews cars, there is … Read more

Drivers are an 'Endangered Species' in latest Forza Motorsport 4 trailer

Turn 10 Studios has produced a live-action trailer for the upcoming Forza Motorsport 4 racing sim for Xbox 360, and it is officially the saddest thing I've seen this week.

Now, I don't mean "sad" as in poorly made. The trailer, titled "Endangered Species," is beautifully produced. It's narrated by Jeremy Clarkson, from the show "Top Gear"; the action follows an enthusiast's escape from a carpool and into an Aston Martin DB9 sports coupe and his subsequent attempts to outrun all those things that suck the joy out of driving. … Read more
