iPhone users downloading more than 5 million free apps a day

iPhone users have been grabbing free apps at a feverish pace, says a new study from mobile ad firm Fiksu.

The download rate showed a gradual dip since this … Read more

Untethered iOS 5.0.1 jailbreak makes it into the wild

It's been a busy week in the realm of iPhone hackery. Earlier today there was the release of an unofficial port of Siri for older iPhones, and now that's joined by an untethered jailbreak for users on Apple's iOS 5.0.1.

The software tweak, which was announced as working by hacker @pod2g earlier this month, works on the iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4 (both GSM and CDMA), iPad 1, and third- and fourth-generation iPod Touch devices, allowing users to jailbreak their phones. That means users could install third-party applications from places outside of Apple's own App … Read more

Chronic-Dev Team gets 10M crash reports in first week

Whether or not the masses actually jailbreak their iPhones, it seems as though users are willing to support the work that the jailbreak community is doing, feeding the Chronic-Dev Team with more than 10 million crash reports in a single week after the release of the Chronic-Dev Crash Reporter application.

The app was created for Mac and Windows and, once installed, allows the Chronic-Dev Team to access the crash reports from your iOS devices before they are sent to Apple. Once accessed, they are sent instead to a server run by the Chronic-Dev Team and analyzed.

That data is then … Read more

How to use the built-in dictionary in iOS 5

One overlooked feature in iOS 5 is the built-in dictionary.

Huh? Yea, we thought the same thing. Apple included a dictionary in iOS 5, allowing users to quickly look up the definition of a word from nearly anywhere in the OS.

To get the definition for a word, simply highlight the word and tap on Define. If Define isn't an option, there should be an arrow on the right side of the pop-up, tap on it, and then press Define. Doing so will launch a dictionary, providing you with a definition, all the while not forcing you to leave … Read more

Apple's iOS 5.1 doesn't fix battery drain bug, say some early reports

The first beta of iOS 5.1 may not resolve the battery drain problem that's been plaguing many iOS 5 users, claim some initial reports.

Released to registered developers on Monday, iOS 5.1 is Apple's latest attempt to squash the battery drain bug cited by a variety of users running iOS 5.

But early reports don't sound too encouraging.

Tech enthusiast site AppAdvice said yesterday it's been hearing "that iOS 5.1 doesn't seem to really help with the iOS 5 battery issues some users have been experiencing." The site already seemed … Read more

iPhone 4S owners complain of persistent echo

Battery drain issues aren't the only problem plaguing some new iPhone 4S users. While Apple tries to address that issue with new updates, some users are also complaining of a persistent and annoying echo.

Since the release of the new iPhone, a large number of users have reported sound quality issues when using an Apple iPhone headset. Owners have also said the problem occurs while using the speakerphone, and it seems to have persisted for many after last week's iOS 5.0.1 update, according to more than 25 pages of discussion on the Apple forums. … Read more

Another iOS 5 update to address battery issues?

Apple could be rolling out another iOS 5 update in the next week or so to try again to fix the battery issues with the iPhone 4S, according to reports.

Apple updated its mobile operating operating system to 5.0.1 last week, which apparently fixed the battery drain issues for some iPhone 4S owners, while others complained the problem was unchanged or even worsened in some cases.

Now German site Macerkopf quotes an unnamed Apple engineer saying that another update, 5.0.2, will be out by the end of next week.… Read more
