Study: Verizon fastest among 4G networks

Verizon's 4G network proved the fastest and most consistent among those of the four major U.S. carriers, according to a study (PDF) out today by mobile testing company RootMetrics.

With the four (but soon to be three, what with yesterday's surprise announcement that AT&T plans to buy T-Mobile USA for $39 billion) major carriers all trumpeting the respective performance of their own high-speed mobile networks, RootMetrics set out to determine which was truly the speediest by testing 4G-capable phones from each one.

Included in the study were the HTC Thunderbolt running on Verizon's LTE network, … Read more

AT&T announces Mobile Hotspot App pricing

Just a couple of days ago, we reported that the HTC Inspire 4G for AT&T would launch on February 13. Aside from being the carrier's first 4G smartphone, it's also the first device to feature AT&T's Mobile Hotspot application. No pricing information was available for the service at first, but we have it now.

AT&T announced today that the feature will cost $45 per month for 4GB of data when bundled with the Data Pro data plan, which is required on all smartphones. Broken down, the Data Pro data plan costs $… Read more

HTC Inspire 4G hitting AT&T Feb. 13 for $99.99

AT&T revealed today that its first 4G smartphone, the HTC Inspire 4G, will be available starting February 13 for a rather attractive price of $99.99 with a two-year contract.

In addition of being the carrier's first 4G device, the Inspire also holds several other distinctions. It has the largest touch screen (4.3-inch super LCD) of any of the smartphones in AT&T's portfolio; it's the first handset in the U.S. to run the latest version of HTC Sense; and it's the first to offer AT&T's mobile hot … Read more

AT&T reveals 4G handsets, LTE launch plans

LAS VEGAS--AT&T announced at its Developer's Summit at CES this morning that it will launch its 4G LTE network by the middle of this year. Details of initial markets, pricing, and exact rollout plans are still few at this point, but the carrier says the network will be complete by 2013.

The news, which comes in the middle of a flurry of 4G announcements here, finally puts AT&T on the road to a high-speed data network. Though rivals like Sprint, T-Mobile, Verizon Wireless, and MetroPCS have operated commercially available 4G networks for several months, AT&… Read more

LED Genome watch is 'uncool proof'

A couple of weeks ago we served up the Kisai Wasted Watch, one of those crazy Japanese LED watches, in our Crave giveaway of the week. Well, for all of who entered the contest and didn't win but are fans these types of gadgets, we thought we should point this bargain out: the Genome LED watch.

This is another special from the folks at brandsdragon.com, which has this guy going for $6.26 (shipping not included). Now, normally we wouldn't post a description of the watch verbatim, but this one is just too wacky not to:

Creative's Bluetooth PC speakers deliver impressive sound for their size

Over the years, we've seen a handful of Bluetooth speakers make their way into our office for testing, but the category has never taken off despite the appealing nature of wireless audio streaming.

Part of the problem is that Bluetooth speakers tend to cost more than your typical powered PC speakers do. Running about $150, Creative's Inspire S2 Bluetooth speaker system isn't cheap, but it is fairly affordable. It's also very small, especially for a 2.1 speaker package that includes a separate subwoofer.

The idea here is that you'd place the speakers in a … Read more

Keeping your boat's bottom shipshape

The U.S. Navy may have developed a solution to hull-dwelling barnacles and slime--a "foul" problem that has plagued sailors and their ships since Noah launched the ark.

The Office of Naval Research (ONR) has developed what looks like a combination pressure washer/minisub called the Hull Bio-inspired Underwater Grooming, or Hull BUG. It's designed to prevent or suppress the growth and build-up of nuisance marine growths such as barnacles--also known as biofouling (PDF).

This could be a major breakthrough. High-performance warships and submarines rely on a clean hull for speedy acceleration and hydroacoustic stealth--things that crustaceans … Read more

Decent rune program

MB Runes Reading Software lets users answer questions and gain insight by reading their runes. The program isn't fancy, but isn't bad for a basic reading.

As is always the case with Mystic Board programs, the first screen is cluttered with Mystic Board ads. After that, users enter their name, birthday, and question, and select the type of rune and spread they want to use for their reading. If users aren't sure which type and spread is best, they can select them in the next two screens, which give illustrations and descriptions of each one. The following … Read more

Thanks for the PC. What do I do with it?

CORONADO, Calif.--This probably doesn't come as a surprise to most parents, but plopping a computer down in front of a student doesn't necessarily translate into academic success.

We've heard a lot in recent years about the One Laptop Per Child initiative, and similar competing programs, which aim to improve educational standards in various parts of the world through computing power. But according to a panel discussion at the Future in Review conference, the computer itself isn't the issue; educators need to find meaningful ways to introduce computers into their day-to-day instructional process.

Designers cook up gadgets of the future

I recently had some time to scroll through the shortlisted entries in Designboom's Dining in 2015 competition, in which industrial designers were encouraged to conceptualize products that will fit how we eat in 2015. Though the winning entry, the Leaf Spoon, was stunning in its simplicity, I much preferred the anthropomorphized grater pictured above, called Scratch my back. I'm dying to recruit this guy to help me out in the kitchen. (Do you hear me, Alessi?)

One of the other more visually stunning entries is "Plus Minus F," an orb-like salt and pepper set that uses … Read more
