Get a Powermat iPhone 4 wireless charger for $19.99

Inductive chargers combine coolness and convenience like few other gadgets. Just lay your phone on a special pad and presto, it recharges--no dock, no wires, no fuss, no muss.

Unfortunately, they tend to be expensive. The Energizer Qi system I reviewed a few months back, for example, was $90 for the pad and $35 for the special case that makes the iPhone, um, inductable. Ouch.

Ah, but how does 20 bucks sound? For a limited time, and while supplies last, Best Buy has the Powermat Wireless Charging System PMM-1P4-B19 for iPhone 4 for $19.99, plus sales tax in most … Read more

Hands-on: Energizer Qi inductive charging pad

Ever since the debut of the Palm Pre, I've been enamored with inductive charging. After all, what could be easier than recharging your phone just by laying it on a special pad or dock--no cord required?

Nothing, that's what. Straight outta "Star Trek," inductive charging relies on an electromagnetic (i.e., wireless) transfer of energy between devices. Yet phone manufacturers still haven't embraced the technology.

Apple certainly hasn't, which is why third-party products like the Powermat and Energizer Qi (pronounced "chee") have arrived to fill the void. I've spent some time … Read more

Mobee charger for Magic Mouse hits Apple stores

Amid all the hoopla of Apple announcing the iPad 2, a small but potentially intriguing $49.99 accessory for owners of Apple's Magic Mouse hit the Apple Store: Mobee's Magic Charger.

You could call it a Powermat for your Magic Mouse, because this is a wireless inductive charger--you swap out the standard batteries for the Mobee rechargeable battery, then lay your mouse on the base station (which has to be plugged into a USB port) to charge the battery.

Mobee Technology says you'll get about six days of "autonomous power" before having to lay it … Read more

Portable cooktop offers twice the convenience

What's better than a portable cooktop that can be used to heat up food anywhere? Why, that would be two portable cooktops that can be used to heat up food anywhere, of course. Or to be more precise, one unit that has two heating elements. About the only thing that could be better than that would be if the double-duty cooktop heated via induction. Well, the Fagor Portable Double Induction Cooktop combines these factors and more.

As a solution to entertaining or table-side cooking, the dual cooktop combines convenience and style. Measuring 23 inches by 13 inches, the smooth … Read more

Light-up cereal boxes a huge turn-on

LAS VEGAS--"OMG, stop everything, there's no need to invent anything else," was what we said when we got to the eCoupled stand at CES. And when you see these photos and video, we're sure you'll agree.

Fulton Innovation--don't worry, we hadn't heard of them either--was out here in Vegas demonstrating wireless charging tech that has blown our tiny, gambling-addled minds. Its fabulous packaging uses induction power to create, among lots of other things, some of the most amazing cereal boxes we've ever seen that can illuminate in stages to create an … Read more

Audi: Bring your phone, leave your charging cable

Audi announced today at its first appearance at the SEMA Show in Las Vegas that it has developed and is bringing to market one of the first OEM applications of wireless device charging for its vehicles. With this charger, Audi claims that people will be able to charge their smartphones in their Audi vehicles without connecting a charging cable, cord, or adapter.

The system was developed in collaboration with Electronics Research Lab, Qualcomm Incorporated, and Peiker and works similarly to the inductive charging mats that we've seen enter the market over the last year or so (such as the … Read more

Induction cooker gets it

Versatility and efficiency go hand in hand in the kitchen. When it comes to appliances and gadgets, these characteristics become important and necessary qualities to look for. The ability to break away from the stovetop is one way to extend the usefulness of the kitchen, but all too often, specialty appliances lack either of these well-regarded traits. However, sometimes the convenience of a standalone cooker offers versatility, efficiency, and more.

The Max Burton Deluxe Induction Cooktop & Interface Disc not only allows for the convenience of cooking anywhere there is an outlet, but does so using the efficiency of induction … Read more

A range with a view

While cooking up a storm in the kitchen is a fun and rewarding experience, wrestling with the equipment isn't anybody's idea of a good time. When it comes to the range, slow-responding burners or elements can be a hindrance, as well as ovens that don't heat consistently throughout. While cooks everywhere work around the quirks present in any particular appliance, sometimes it can be hard to ignore what else is out there.

With a convection oven and an induction cooktop, the Kenmore Elite Stainless Steel 30-Inch Freestanding Induction Range offers consistency and efficiency in one package. The … Read more
