If you are concerned about your Mac starting to run slow or become unstable, you may have looked into regularly running maintenance routines to clear caches, log files, and other temporary items from your system. You may have even seen advertisements for programs that automate these tasks. While such routines can be beneficial if a system is experiencing slowdowns, and should not adversely affect the system if implemented correctly, there is potential for something to go awry. This is especially true if you use an outdated version of these software packages that may have a bug or two in it.… Read more
Apple is currently preparing a supplemental update for OS X 10.8.5 users, which should address some outstanding bugs that have cropped up in the latest OS X release.
Apple's latest OS X 10.8.5 update, issued on September 12, brought a number of fixes including improved 802.11ac support, among other fixes for screensavers, networking, and authentication. However, along with these fixes the update seemed to break functionality for a number of users, who have posted numerous complaints on the Apple discussion boards.
Is your Mac taking a little slower to boot, open applications, and otherwise perform some tasks? If so then one reason may be if your hard drive has minimal free space left on it. As with most operating systems, OS X uses a virtual memory system for managing memory, and this system optimizes RAM by using the hard drive as an intermediary storage location for unused memory contents. This process is similar to moving unused papers from a desk to a drawer temporarily, to free up more desk space so you can work optimally.
As with a cluttered desk, a … Read more
The thing about portable hard drives is, they're awesome. They're slim and travel-friendly, and they're powered by USB so you don't have to worry about finding an outlet. Too bad they usually come at a premium.

You buy a storage device to put your precious data on. If the device dies, you're basically on your own. Your data is gone for good unless you have backups.
To try to help ease the fear, Seagate introduced its Seagate Rescue and Seagate Rescue and Replace data protection plans, offering coverage starting at $29.99. The former offers data recovery, the latter also includes a replacement of the storage device itself.
This is the first time that a storage vendor offers a complete plan that covers both drive replacement and data recovery services for data contained on the … Read more
So far, tablets generally use flash memory as their internal storage. That's about to change.
Seagate announced today a new Ultra Mobile hard drive (HDD), designed exclusively for mobile devices. The storage vendor says the new hard drive, with up to 500GB, will enable tablets to have PC-like storage space, while offering the same reliability as does flash memory.
The Ultra Mobile HDD is integrated with Seagate's Mobile Enablement Kit that includes Seagate's Dynamic Data Driver software technology to address key areas to make it function beyond a standard laptop HDD. These areas include shock management, heat … Read more
A portable hard drive is essential gear for today's mobile worker, but most drives aren't designed to withstand the rigors of common work environments: factory floors, construction sites, military deployments, and so on.

When using your Mac, maintaining a small amount of free drive space is required to keep your system running optimally. While nothing stops you from adding files to your drive until it can hold no more, once you start encroaching on the last ~10GB-20GB of space, the system will not be able to manage its virtual memory footprint as easily, resulting in slower performance. Additionally, even though OS X manages file fragmentation for conventional hard drives well by keeping 20MB chunks of data in contiguous blocks, this feature requires free space to work, and may suffer if you are limited … Read more
