Audi's next-generation MultiMedia Interface (MMI) could feature handwriting recognition. You read that right, handwriting recognition. Not advanced voice command. Not some science-fiction extrasensory perception interface, but plain old 20th century handwriting recognition. I thought these cabin tech interfaces were supposed to be getting less complex.

The iPhone may be getting Chinese handwriting recognition, but that doesn't mean it's done yet. Diotek, a mobile software company based in Korea, has announced the development of its DioPen--a handwriting software for the iPhone. According to ZDNet Korea, the DioPen can recognize Korean, Chinese, and English letters and digits written in cursive, print, or both. It works on the iPhone's touch screen, as well as displays on other handsets. No word on when it'll be available.

A day really doesn't go by these days without some kind of news involving the iPhone. The latest comes from a Chinese blog called Wretch.cc, which posted screenshots of a Chinese handwriting recognition function in the handset. This function was reportedly included in the new iPhone 2.0 beta firmware and verified by MacRumors. The handwriting recognition software reportedly allows users to writer characters on the screen with their fingers. Suggestions for the character will appear on the right of the panel where users can then pick the right one.

I am absolutely in love with Fontifier, a simple service that creates a font from your own handwriting. Fontifier isn't new--Daily Candy covered it in 2005 and I saw it on the Craft blog--but in my opinion, good, ol' fashioned handwriting needs all the help it can get. (By, of course, making it less old fashioned.)

I'm a stylus user from way back, so I was really looking forward to using Vista's Tablet PC features to control apps on my touchscreen notebook. What I didn't realize was how much fun it is to mark up documents in Word 2007, and to send handwritten notes in Outlook 2007.
