2011 Audi A8 gets handwriting recognition

Audi's flagship A8 luxury sedan is the company's technological tour de force, and the company says its 2011 iteration will sport handwriting recognition among its many features.

The feature will be supported in the vehicle's Multi Media Interface, or MMI--effectively the navigation/media unit in the car's console. It allows the user to write the destination in freehand and then use the touch screen to manipulate the directions as necessary.

Next-gen Audi MMI could feature handwriting recognition

Audi's next-generation MultiMedia Interface (MMI) could feature handwriting recognition. You read that right, handwriting recognition. Not advanced voice command. Not some science-fiction extrasensory perception interface, but plain old 20th century handwriting recognition. I thought these cabin tech interfaces were supposed to be getting less complex.

According to German car blog Autobild, the new MMI should debut at the International Motor Show in Frankfurt on the new Audi A8. The handwriting-recognition portion, poorly Google translated as "Finger Ready," will feature a character input square where drivers will finger-paint letters on the screen a la first-generation Palm OS Graffiti, … Read more

Discover handwriting's meaning

MB Learn Graphology gives users a tutorial and a test on the many details involved in a person's handwriting. With a simple setup, users can begin reading between the lines and interpreting handwriting samples.

The interface of this program was surprisingly simple, given the complicated subject matter. Users navigate the tutorial and the test by mouse clicks that are well labeled. In addition, the photography is crisp and adds to the experience. There is a Help file, but the layout of this program is so self-explanatory most will not need assistance. This program is divided into two primary functions: … Read more

Utilitarian digital checkbook

Personal Checkbook Advantage offers to help users keep a digital checkbook and a permanent record of their transactions, but it's lacking some useful features and leaves much to be desired in the design department.

This freeware program has a basic interface that is so bare-bones it is a little difficult to navigate at first. With a short list of blue command buttons down the left side of the simple screen, users must choose between Register, Report, Setup, and Utilities. None of which sound much like checking options. Clicking on each showcases submenus of commands, most just as confusing. Once … Read more

Report: iPhone may recognize Korean writing too

The iPhone may be getting Chinese handwriting recognition, but that doesn't mean it's done yet. Diotek, a mobile software company based in Korea, has announced the development of its DioPen--a handwriting software for the iPhone. According to ZDNet Korea, the DioPen can recognize Korean, Chinese, and English letters and digits written in cursive, print, or both. It works on the iPhone's touch screen, as well as displays on other handsets. No word on when it'll be available.

Report: Chinese character recognition on iPhone

A day really doesn't go by these days without some kind of news involving the iPhone. The latest comes from a Chinese blog called Wretch.cc, which posted screenshots of a Chinese handwriting recognition function in the handset. This function was reportedly included in the new iPhone 2.0 beta firmware and verified by MacRumors. The handwriting recognition software reportedly allows users to writer characters on the screen with their fingers. Suggestions for the character will appear on the right of the panel where users can then pick the right one.

Hands-on: Fontifier

I am absolutely in love with Fontifier, a simple service that creates a font from your own handwriting. Fontifier isn't new--Daily Candy covered it in 2005 and I saw it on the Craft blog--but in my opinion, good, ol' fashioned handwriting needs all the help it can get. (By, of course, making it less old fashioned.)

In about 5 minutes yesterday, I printed out Fontifier's template, scratched in my own versions of all the letters and symbols in a typical font, then scanned and uploaded the sheet. I expected that once I uploaded my alphabet, I'… Read more

Use Office 2007's ink feature to add impact to Word doc markups

I'm a stylus user from way back, so I was really looking forward to using Vista's Tablet PC features to control apps on my touchscreen notebook. What I didn't realize was how much fun it is to mark up documents in Word 2007, and to send handwritten notes in Outlook 2007.

You can use Vista's pen features on a touchscreen laptop or tablet-equipped PC to do much more than simply mark up Word documents or write e-mail as handwritten graphics, but after many attempts I remain unconvinced of the usefulness of the OS's handwriting recognition. … Read more

Send handwritten notes, by phone

It seems hard to believe that, well into the 21st century, so many offices still must keep fax machines to do business. But at least some manufacturers are trying to evolve their Paleolithic technology, whether by going mobile or making lattes. (A little perfume never hurts either.)

NEC is taking an even more ambitious route that, surprisingly, involves the most analog form of communication of all: handwriting. The SP-NA640 will scan the worst of your chicken scratchings or doodlings and send them to any mobile phone as an image document, even in color, according to Akihabara News. With such great … Read more
