German appeals court keeps Galaxy Tab 10.1 out of stores

Samsung has been dealt another blow in Germany.

The Higher Regional Court in Dusseldorf today upheld an earlier injunction, requested by Apple and imposed by a lower court on the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1, saying that the tablet violates a German anti-competition statute. In addition, the court said that the Samsung Galaxy Tab 8.9 is also in violation of the law.

FOSS Patents today was first to report on the ruling.

In September, Judge Joahnna Brueckner-Hoffman ruled that there is a "clear impression of similarity" between Apple's iPad and the Galaxy Tab 10.1, and … Read more

Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 now flying with American Airlines

Samsung's Galaxy Tab 10.1 is flying high.

The company today announced that its tablet is now available to American Airlines customers flying in the first- and business-class cabins on transcontinental and overseas flights. More specifically, the company said the tablets, which are running custom-built software, are on flights from New York's JFK to Los Angeles and San Francisco, as well as on planes traveling from Miami to San Francisco and Los Angeles. International flights to and from Europe and South America will also have tablets.

Samsung and American Airlines announced their partnership in June. The companies say … Read more

T-Mobile touts two 4G Android tablets: SpringBoard, Galaxy Tab

The U.S. carrier T-Mobile announced plans today to sell to two Android tablets with 4G networking abilities in coming weeks, its own 7-inch SpringBoard and Samsung's Galaxy Tab 10.1.

Each will come with the newest version of Google's tablet-oriented Honeycomb incarnation of the Android operating system, version 3.2, and will go on sale "in time for the holidays," the company said.

Samsung's 10.1-inch tablet first debuted months ago, but without 4G networking abilities. It's at the heart of a swirling collection of patent infringement lawsuits with Apple, whose iOS-powered iPad … Read more

Ruling on Apple-Samsung spat in Australia coming next week?

Apple will need to wait until Monday at the very earliest to hear whether its request for a preliminary injunction against Samsung's Galaxy Tab 10.1 will be granted in Australia, a new report claims.

According to Reuters, Judge Annabelle Bennett promised a quick decision on the case after lawyers for Apple and Samsung completed their arguments in the Australian federal court earlier this week. Although the attorneys expected a decision today, it appears now that Bennett will use the weekend before making a final determination on the matter.

T-Mobile next in line to offer Galaxy Tab 10.1

T-Mobile is the latest carrier to announce upcoming availability of the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 tablet.

A short post on the provider's official Facebook page indicates that full details will be coming in the next few weeks. It's not immediately known whether this will be a Wi-Fi, 3G, or 4G model or whether it will be subsidized with a two-year service agreement.

Currently, Verizon offers 4G LTE-ready version of the 10.1-inch tablet with prices starting at $529.99 with contract, so we might expect something comparable out of T-Mobile. … Read more

Samsung fires back at Apple in Australia, report says

Samsung has filed a counterclaim in Australia against Apple and its iOS-based devices as the bitter battle between the companies continues.

Samsung and Apple have been embroiled in a long struggle in Australia. Apple has charged that Samsung's Galaxy Tab 10.1 violates patents it holds. Though Samsung disagrees with that sentiment, the companies agreed earlier this year to a deal that would ban the sale of the U.S. version of the Galaxy Tab 10.1 in Australia. Moreover, Samsung agreed to provide Apple with three samples of its Galaxy Tab 10.1, which Apple could then review … Read more

Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 banned from sale in Germany

Samsung's Galaxy Tab 10.1 has been blocked from sale in Germany following a key court ruling against the company.

A German court today banned the sale of the Galaxy Tab 10.1 in its country, arguing that the device infringed Apple patents. According to the AFP, which first reported on the story, judge Johanna Brueckner-Hoffmann said that there is a "clear impression of similarity" between the iPad and Galaxy Tab 10.1.

As one might expect, Samsung is not pleased with the court's decision. In an e-mailed statement to CNET, the company said that it … Read more

Apple should show how Samsung tablet hurts sales, judge says

Apple is being pressured to reveal iPad sales for the U.S. or U.K. in order to prove its tablet business has been nicked by Samsung's Galaxy Tab 10.1, according to Bloomberg.

Annabelle Bennett, a judge in Australia's federal court, said today that Apple isn't presenting enough evidence to justify an injunction against Samsung's tablet in her country. To prove that the iPad maker's tablet sales have been hurt by Samsung's device, Apple would need to offer sales data to make its case, Bloomberg reported.

BlackBerry PlayBook tablet gets $150 price cut

The BlackBerry PlayBook got a hefty discount at one major reseller though it hardly compares to the fire-sale pricing seen recently for Hewlett-Packard's TouchPad.

Best Buy today started offering the 64GB PlayBook at $550, $150 off the original price of the $700.

That hardly compares to the $100 offer for the 16GB HP TouchPad. Nevertheless, the PlayBook is not a defunct platform like the TouchPad and $550 is a low price for a 64GB tablet. 64GB models from Apple, for example, are more than $800.

Features include BlackBerry's Tablet Operating System based on QNX, Wi-Fi connectivity, 7-inch HD capacitive screen with multi-touch, 1024 x 600 resolution, 1GB of system memory, 1GHz dual-core processor, forward and rear cameras, and Micro USB and Micro HDMI ports.

Best Buy is also offering the 16GB PlayBook for $449, $50 off the regular price of $499.

But stiff 7-inch tablet competition is on the way. The Lenovo 7-inch IdeaPad A1 with Android 2.3 will be offered at $200 and $250 for 8GB and 16GB models respectively. (Currently, the release date for the A1 is unclear.) And existing 7-inch competition includes the original Samsung Galaxy Tab, a model released last year, which is priced at $279 at Best Buy.

Overall, the PlayBook is competing in an increasingly crowded tablet market. Apple's iPad dominates the tablet space, making it very difficult for any rival to gain a big toehold. And then there's the non-Apple market with tablets from Motorola, Samsung, Toshiba, Acer, Asus, and others--all based on Google's Android operating system. Not to mention the WebOS-based TouchPad, which is due for a final production run in the coming weeks at $100 and $150 for the 16GB and 32GB models respectively. … Read more
