Lenovo slim tower uncovers another new Nvidia GPU

LAS VEGAS--Along with the new IdeaCentre all-in-ones and its new gaming desktop, Lenovo also has a new standard slim-tower PC on deck for later this year.

The H520 is a pure commodity PC, albeit in an attractive case. I've asked Lenovo for some better pictures, which I'll post as soon as I have them.

From the spec sheet, at least, this system actually offers one surprise. Again pre-empting Nvidia's own announcements, for this system Lenovo provides details of a heretofore unannounced 2GB GeForce GTX 630 graphics card option.

Otherwise the configuration options look standard. Intel Core CPU options go up to the i7 family, although exactly what generation of the Core i7 Lenovo has in mind is unclear. Given the June release schedule, I'd bet Ivy Bridge. The starting price for the base model will be $499 when the H520 makes its debut.… Read more

No word on when this will actually be available, but we do know a price: $39.99. When we get more info, we'll fill you in. For now, have a look at this video of an iPad going up to the edge of space in a G-Form Extreme Sleeve.… Read more

Firefox add-ons automatically back up whatever you type

If you've ever filled in a Web form, chances are you have experienced having the text you just entered get wiped out when the page freezes, unexpectedly reloads, or otherwise causes the form to reset. Here are three Firefox add-ons that let you replace this lost text with just a few clicks.

Of course, some of what you enter on Web sites shouldn't be retrievable. The Clear Form History add-on deletes all entries saved in a search box, sign-in field, or other text field. And to see at a glance the country hosting the current site's server … Read more

Nokia R&D dreams up mind-bending tech

SUNNYVALE, Calif.--With the Nokia Research Center leading the way, the Finnish handset manufacturer could be headed down one twisted road--and we mean that in a good way.

Since its founding in 1986, the NRC has been charged with developing mobile technology through the exploration of science. The center recently celebrated its 25th anniversary, and to commemorate the milestone, Nokia hosted various events around the world. CNET got to take part in the U.S. celebrations at Nokia's Sunnyvale, Calif., headquarters yesterday, where we got to check out some of the latest innovations from the NRC. … Read more

iPad in G-Form case drops 1,300 feet and survives

If you've been looking for the toughest case for your iPad, G-Form is making one that may just be at the top of the pile. After being dropped from more than 1,300 feet, the iPad protected by a G-Form case lives to be tapped another day.

The G-Form sleeve and folio cases for iPad are made from a composite blend of G-Form's proprietary materials combined with PORON XRD material. They are lightweight and water-resistant and clearly able to withstand impact from extreme heights, as the video below demonstrates:… Read more

Nokia's HumanForm concept oozes appeal

There seems to be a big brainstorm at the Nokia Research Center lately. It recently showed off the all-touch-screen Gem concept and a mind-bending flexible device interface.

One of its latest innovations is a radical new piece of concept hardware called HumanForm.

This fish-shaped concept is a departure from the rectangular devices we gawk over these days, and gives us an peek at a future where smartphone design has evolved beyond limitation. The soul of HumanForm contains part nanotechnology, a flexible display, and kinetic interaction. … Read more

Internet Captcha-cha-cha

Captchas are those squiggly, random words or numbers you type in a box to prove to a Web site that you're a human being and not another computer. The word isn't a variation of "capture," it's an acronym: Completely Automated Public Turing test to tell Computers and Humans Apart. Internet Captcha is a free tool that creates colorful animated Captchas you can embed in your Web site to limit traffic to people and exclude other computers. The Captchas it creates use number codes with distortion, animated effects, and background objects that make them impossible for … Read more

iPad survives 60-foot fall to pavement in soft case

It used to be that iOS devices only fell from high places by accident, but the phenomenon of tossing them has also become great marketing fodder. The latest example comes from the folks at G-Form, who previously tested their iPad Extreme sleeve by tossing it 500 feet from an ultralight aircraft (the sleeve also survived being run over by a car in this video).

This time it's a head-to-head with what appears to be a hard-cover iPad case in a drop onto asphalt from 60 feet up. Check it out in the video below.

The iPad in the hard shell smacks the pavement with a thud and gets smashed up pretty good, while the G-Form Extreme Portfolio soft sleeve gets a nice bounce off of impact, takes a licking, and keeps on playing whatever Pixar movie it is that they cued up.

After G-Form's last video with the toss from the ultralight, I speculated that some credit may be due to the tough glass Apple uses for iPads, but this latest video installment and all the shattered glass therein gives me a sudden appetite for crow. Anticipating such skepticism again, though, the G-Form folks have made the entire, uncut video available on their Web site for those suspicious of a possible switcheroo. … Read more

Macro magic

A macro is an automated series of computer actions that can save you a lot of time if you find yourself doing the same tasks over and over again. Unfortunately, macros aren't always easy to create, which means that a lot of people who could benefit from them never get the chance. iMacros for Internet Explorer changes this, making it easy even for novices to create and use macros.
