Samsung Exhibit II 4G review: Android on a shoestring

Want a seriously cheap Android Gingerbread phone that doesn't suck? You got it! Meet T-Mobile's Samsung Exhibit II 4G.

It has T-Mobile's HSPA+ speeds (hence the "4G"), a front-facing camera, a 3-megapixel rear-facing camera, and a 1GHz processor. Plus, it's filled with a bunch of useful apps, like T-Mobile TV HD. Overall, it's a nice chunk of plastic smartphone power for just $30 with a contract and $200 without one.

Read all the pros and cons, take the video tour, and peruse the photos (including comparative camera shots) in the full Samsung Exhibit II 4G review.… Read more

Samsung Exhibit II 4G is a $30 Android steal for T-Mobile

Samsung is a company with a penchant for sequels, and just a few months after releasing Exhibit A, here comes Exhibit B: the Samsung Exhibit II 4G.

The specs are modest to be sure, and very similar to the original. It starts with Android 2.3 Gingerbread running behind a 3.7-inch WVGA touch screen and powered by a 1 GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon processor. There's a 3-megapixel rear-facing camera and a front-facing VGA camera. In addition to the usual Wi-Fi, GPS, and Bluetooth support there's also T-Mobile TV and the Samsung Media Hub.

Of course, there's also … Read more

Samsung Galaxy W to arrive in U.S. as T-Mobile's Exhibit II 4G

T-Mobile is having a hard time keeping its upcoming smartphones under wraps. Yesterday, it was the LG Doubleplay and today it appears we have the official press images of the forthcoming Samsung Exhibit II 4G.

Based on early details, the handset looks to be a rebranded version of Samsung's new Galaxy W series. Specifications are said to include Android 2.3 Gingerbread, a 1.4GHz (single-core) processor, a 3.7-inch WVGA display, a 5-megapixel rear camera, and support for 3G HSPA+. … Read more

Samsung Exhibit 4G review: Fast and worth the bucks

T-Mobile has really taken to its 4G phones, and in the Samsung Exhibit 4G we see not only speed, but also practicality. In the Exhibit, T-Mo offers a less ambitious handset than, say, the CNET Editors' Choice Award-winning HTC Sensation 4G. However, it's one that still packs in promise: Android 2.3 Gingerbread, a 1GHz processor, and both a front-facing and a rear-facing camera.

We also have to acknowledge Samsung's part in helping rehabilitate its hardware reputation with a phone that doesn't look and feel like a lump of melted black plastic. Instead, the Exhibit comes coated … Read more

T-Mobile releases Samsung Exhibit 4G, Gravity Smart

Just a day after it announced release dates for the HTC Sensation 4G, T-Mobile is back for more Android fun with the new Exhibit 4G and Gravity Smart. Both smartphones carry a budget price tag and will be out in June.

The Exhibit 4G sports a slim candy bar design in violet or black. The touch screen takes up most of the real estate leaving space below for three touch controls and a physical OK button. You'll use a virtual keyboard with Swype for your typing needs and it all runs on Android 2.3 Gingerbread.

Inside you'll … Read more

Another click in the wall

Shanghai Polar Vision's 3D-Wall creates an attractive wall-style photo display. The program doesn't offer much in the way of features, so it's not for users who want to make customized slideshows. But for a simple, sleek and free photo display, 3D-Wall fits the bill.

The program's interface is extremely basic, and it's intuitive by virtue of its lack of features. You can select either individual photos or folders of photos to include in your presentation. You can't customize the appearance of the display; no captions, no adjusting the order of the images, no background … Read more

London Design fest celebrates design art, business

Several colleagues of mine are in London this week to unveil the special TEDGlobal issue of our design mind magazine in a very special TED Salon on Monday, with the title "More Substance of Things Not Seen." The event will be co-hosted by frog design and TED, and moderated by Sam Martin, editor-in-chief of design mind, and Bruno Giussani, European director of TED.

It comes in handy for the frog delegation that this is also the first week of the magnanimous London Design Festival, an eclectic assembly of design-related programs, exhibitions, and parties all over town.… Read more

Jeep Wrangler on steroids built with military in mind

Jeep stakeholders reasserted their intention to regain a share of the international military market at the Defence Systems & Equipment International Exhibition in London this week.

Chrysler has teamed up with the Jankel Group to market a new tactical version of the commercially available Jeep Unlimited. The Jeep J8 (it's the eighth version of the Wrangler) has been extensively modified but retains the long wheelbase, drive train, and distinctive profile (PDF).

The J8 will be available in 12 configurations including light patrol, pickup truck, personnel carrier, armored, and ambulance variants.

"What the J8 is, really, is a tremendously … Read more

Photographer without legs tells life story from ground up

At first glance, Kevin Connolly's photographs simply capture random people on random streets around the world. But look again, and it becomes clear his photos tell a much more complex story--the split-second shock and curiosity on strangers' faces when they encounter a man with no legs, gliding past on a skateboard, propelling himself with his hands.

Connolly, 22, was born legless. He has gone from award-winning skier who tears down slopes in his custom-built mono-ski to professional photographer probably best-known for "The Rolling Exhibition," his series of digital photos that show strangers looking at him with expressions … Read more

Photos: Robots at work and play in Japan

Where do all the coolest robots hang out? Japan, of course.

The 2007 International Robot Exhibition sponsored by the Japan Robot Association claims to be the largest robotics trade show in the world. The show, which runs November 28 to December 1, serves as a venue for everything from tiny robot toys and educational tools to giant industrial robots that manufacture cars.

This headless-looking robot is actually fully intact. The E-nuvo walk robot from Japan-based ZMP could be thought of as the Japanese version of a Lego Mindstorms robot. Only this line of learning robots, which is offered in basic, … Read more
