How Microsoft can avoid the pitfalls of Sony's PS4 announcement

Editor's note: It's official. Microsoft has announced the future of Xbox (and the next console) will be revealed at an event in Redmond, Washington on May 21.

CNET's live coverage of Microsoft's event Tuesday, May 21

Press events are a tricky beast. No one ever said they were easy to pull off. But with Sony casting the first stone in the next-generation console gaming war, Microsoft can learn a lot from what worked and what didn't.

When the lights went up, Sony execs were shaking hands and congratulating each other. But the packed house at … Read more

Google debuts event page for Academy Awards ceremony

Google is rolling out the red carpet for the Academy Awards with a destination site that promises to help movie fans "get more from the Oscars."

In a partnership with Oscars organizers, the Web giant has created a resource page to keep people engaged and informed in the days leading up to the awards ceremony on Sunday. While Google has created event-specific sites before, such as its election hub last year, this is the first time it has focused on the Oscars.

In honor of its Oscars debut, Google is making sure it gets as many of its … Read more

Sunrise is a beautiful, free iPhone calendar alternative

Last November I covered a new service called Sunrise. The goal of the service, after connecting it to your Facebook, LinkedIn, and Google Calendar accounts, was to help you start the day with a personalized agenda in your inbox. It would incorporate details about upcoming meetings, as well as who you're meeting with, from the various services.

While having an organized agenda automatically created for you each morning with important details was intriguing, after using the service for a few weeks the e-mail started to feel more like spam than a helpful digital assistant.

Fast-forward to today: Sunrise has … Read more

PlayStation 4: What we expect, what it needs, and why

CNET's live coverage of Sony's event on Wednesday

Sony's February 20 event in New York City will likely mark the announcement of the PlayStation 4 and simultaneously usher in the next generation of console gaming. (Sorry, Wii U, but you're more last-gen than next-gen.)

Rumors mills are also churning out details confidently declaring that the Xbox 360 successor will also see the light of day before June's big E3 gaming show in Los Angeles.

Perhaps the biggest news? Both consoles could make their debuts -- gasp -- this year. That's a hyperspeed acceleration in … Read more

Facebook rolls out 'Buy Tickets' button for Event Pages

Facebook is in the process of rolling out "Buy Tickets" buttons, a feature that hints at the social network's intention to enter the online ticketing business.

The buy option, first spotted by All Facebook, is being introduced as a new feature for all Facebook Event Page owners who want to better promote ticket purchases. The buttons allow visitors to click through to a third-party Web site to purchase tickets.

Facebook confirmed the rollout to CNET. The Buy Tickets button merely replaces the previous option, a bit.ly link, that sent people offsite to the event creator's … Read more

Join us Tuesday at 10 a.m. PT for Facebook's press event (live blog)

Give Facebook this much: They know how to bait a hook.

After sending out a media invitation last week to "Come and See What We're Building," we're all chomping at the bit to learn more. Many on Wall Street believe this is going to be a Very Big Deal in the company's ongoing efforts to better monetize its billion-plus users.

Is it a phone? Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg last summer denied that was in the works. But it's possible. Is it a new building? Nobody cares. How about something tied to search? That's … Read more

How to quickly set calendar times in OS X

Apple's built-in Calendar application in OS X is a convenient calendaring tool to have; however, its default method of entering calendar dates may be a bit cumbersome by first appearances.

When you first enter an event in Calendar, you select the calendar you wish to use and then double-click the date on which to create the event. You can then title the event accordingly. By default this action creates an all-day event that will further need to be refined by editing it to adjust its time frame. While those who use Calendar may find this somewhat acceptable though a … Read more

Apple spent 2012 much like it did the year before: relentlessly pushing out new products. But that's nothing new.

YouTube gets channel-surfing makeover

Friday's CNET Update is channel surfing:

YouTube has a new design that puts a greater focus on subscriptions and channels. YouTube hopes it will get more users to stay on the site longer by flipping through channels -- similar to how folks lose themselves while browsing television stations.

Also in today's tech news roundup:

- Foursquare added event listings, so a business can post about when there's something unique going on, such as a trivia night, book signing, or wine tasting.

- You can now create repeat events on Facebook. Handy for people with regularly-scheduled meetups.
