Is Dyson's Digital Slim cordless vac worth the money?

If you've ever bought a Dyson product--or even looked at one--you know that they tend to run pretty expensive.

In the case of the Dyson DC35 Digital Slim, you're looking at $299 for a cordless vacuum. That's a lot of dough, but the Slim, which is shaped more like a cleaning weapon than an appliance, has a dash of Dyson's usual innovative, fancy-sounding technology. It sustains suction level (even when the bin is filled up) with something called Root Cyclone technology, and it comes with a "fade-free" lithium ion battery that you just won'… Read more

Touring the high-tech 2010 Showtime House

For the past several years, cable channel Showtime has been putting together an annual showcase for its original programming called the Showtime House. Different interior designers are called in to create rooms themed around shows such as Dexter and Weeds, and the entire thing is built into several floors of an NYC building (this year's version was at the newly open Cassa hotel and residences in midtown Manhattan).

As Showtime is our corporate cousin in the extended CBS family, several CNET editors visited the location during construction and made themselves available to consult with the designers on their technology questions. The end result was that the Showtime House was packed with cool high-tech gadgets, from 3D televisions to video games to Dyson's bladeless Air Multiplier fan. … Read more

Buoyancy bazooka could save lives at sea

So simple, yet so brilliant. Designer Samuel Adeloju's clever little idea of a life-saving ring that can be "shot" out to someone in danger of drowning beyond the reach of a simple toss has won him 10,000 pounds ($15,890) in the James Dyson Award against 14 finalists. The international design award aims at inspiring young people to design something that solves a problem.

Given that Adeloju hails from surf-happy Australia, one can guess at the inspiration floating his boat. The Longreach Buoyancy Deployment System works on the idea of a bazooka-like device that can fire … Read more

Bladeless fan no longer a Dyson exclusive

Aside from selling inexpensive Android tablets, little-known company Abiko had another interesting gadget at its booth at Comex 2010 in Singapore--a bladeless fan. Yes, the electric fan trying to impersonate a lollipop from British company Dyson (read our hands-on coverage here) has been cloned.

Abiko doesn't use the fancy "Air Multiplier" moniker, but that doesn't matter since its version is indistinguishable from the original. The fan turns and tilts the same way, and the feel and position of the buttons all mimic Dyson's expensive table fan exactly.

The company is selling it at $223, $73 … Read more

Dyson delivers two larger blade-free fans

Last year, Dyson attracted a lot of attention with a couple of blade-free fans that used something called Air Multiplier technology to blow a nice, even stream of air to cool you down. Those 10 and 12-inch models aren't exactly cheap, costing $299.99 and $329. But instead of making more affordable fans, Dyson is coming out with two larger higher-end models that will cost $450.

The AM02 Tower (pictured left), available in iron, blue and silver, or just silver, stands 1m tall and measures 19cm wide, whereas the AM03 Pedestal fan is even larger and pumps out more … Read more

Gadgettes 170: The 'enough with the feminism' episode (podcast)

Dyson unveils blade-free fan

At first glance, James Dyson's latest invention looks like a powerful HD antenna or perhaps a small portal into another world. But in fact, the device, which carries the vaunting title of Dyson Air Multiplier, is something much more common: a fan.

What, a fan with no blades? Yes, that's exactly what you're looking at, and what makes the Air Multiplier so hard for people to classify at first. This fan uses some innovative airflow engineering to pull air up through an energy-efficient brushless motorbase and multiply it 15 times, expelling it through an airfoil-shaped ramp at a rate of 118 gallons a second, according to the press release.

Dyson, the company, says its fluid dynamics engineers spent four years "running hundreds of simulations to precisely measure and optimize the machine's aperture and airfoil-shaped ramp" and air fluctuations were mapped with something called a Laser Doppler Annometry. … Read more

Astronaut training awaits Esther Dyson

While many in the tech industry have their eyes on the cloud, Ester Dyson has set her sights on the stars.

The longtime tech pundit and investor on Tuesday said she is putting aside most of her day-to-day activities to undergo full-time astronaut training. She'll be a backup to another member of the tech industry, Charles Simonyi, who is set to make a second trip to the International Space Station next spring.

Dyson and Simonyi are indulging their cosmic interests under the auspices of Space Adventures, a company that arranges space flights for private citizens and in which Dyson … Read more

Battle of the high-tech hand dryers

Believe it or not, one of the most popular items ever featured on Crave was a hand dryer. Not just any old washroom appliance, mind you, but the Dyson Airblade--a supposedly state-of-the-art contraption from the U.K. that "strips water droplets off your mitts in 6 to 12 seconds" with air traveling at 400 miles per hour. (See NYC Craver Rich DeMuro test it out in this video and judge for yourself.)

But barely three months later, it already has competition from another European company that makes the "Veltia," a self-proclaimed "new generation hand … Read more
