Chirpify: Tweet if you want to give money to Obama or Romney

Chirpify, the company that essentially turns tweets into money, is getting into politics.

The company launched its "Tweet a Presidential Candidate" Web site today. The site lets donors give and track donations to the Barack Obama and Mitt Romney presidential campaigns with a tweet.

Chris Teso, Chirpify's CEO, said the 4-month-old company sees Twitter as the perfect platform for fundraising. He said Chirpify recognized social media's influential role during the 2008 presidential election when the Obama's campaign took advantage of social media for a grassroots approach.

Facebook decided to use its multi-million-member network to make it easier for people to become organ donors and it seems that so far, it's working.

Since Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg and COO Sheryl Sandberg made the announcement early today that users can add if they are organ donors to their timelines, the Donate Life California registry has had an 800 percent increase in its organ donor registrations.

Obama's staffers to use Square mobile in fundraising

It's no secret that President Obama is a fan of technology.

Just this past month, he joined Instagram, visited Intel to discuss high-tech manufacturing jobs, made plans to have a Google+ video chat with voters, and his wife, Michelle Obama, joined Twitter.

Now, he is beginning to use Square mobile to process his re-election campaign donations, according to Politico.

Obama's headquarters staff, field organizers, and volunteers will all be given Square mobile credit card readers, which will let them receive campaign donations through their smartphones.

Microsoft's money saves July 4 fireworks

An 11th hour campaign to save Seattle's July 4 fireworks display has succeeded, thanks in large part to $125,000 donations from Microsoft and Starbucks.

Short of a needed $500,000 to run Seattle's annual fireworks display, organizers had feared they would have to cancel this year's July 4 event. However, Microsoft and Starbucks pledged to match a combined $250,000 in donations and, by Friday, other businesses and individuals raised that amount, allowing the event to proceed.
