Skitch and Evernote, now in Dolphin

As the mobile Web matures with phenomenal user growth, the Dolphin HD browser introduced today two add-ons that bring the power of apps to the mobile browser.

The new add-ons for Evernote (download) and Skitch (download) take previously app-only features and port them directly into Dolphin HD for Android only. Unlike most Dolphin HD add-ons, neither of these can be added from within Dolphin. You must go through the Android Market links above to get them.

Taking features from an app and adding them to a browser is common on PCs, but it's still fairly rare in the mobile … Read more

Dolphin gets new look, better sync and battery life

Updates to Dolphin HD for iOS and Android bring notable improvements to the browser on both platforms. Released yesterday, the overhaul of the iOS version's look makes it much more usable, while the Android edition keeps the feature-rich app running in ship-shape.

Dolphin HD 3.0 for iOS has an iPhone version and an iPad version, and the new look brings it more in line with its appearance on Android. The Speed Dial landing page has been refreshed to make it cleaner, while the Webzine feature for streamlining magazine-style content has expanded its categories and introduced some much-needed customization. … Read more

Dolphin HD browser snared in security breach

The makers of a popular mobile browser called Dolphin HD confirmed that their software leaks the addresses of all Web sites a user visits, a potential privacy and security breach.

MoboTap, a Pasadena, Calif.-based mobile developer, told CNET today that Dolphin HD for Android transmitted the Web addresses back to the company's servers but that they were not stored. The addresses were used to determine whether to format Web pages in "Webzine" format, MoboTap said.

The privacy and security implications arise when a user connects to a secure Web site (usually shown by "https://" … Read more

Tidy your text with Dolphin Text Editor Menu

Text editors are, by design, lacking in features; they're meant to be lightweight programs that are used to handle text that doesn't require much formatting or other fanciness. Dolphin Text Editor Menu is an innovative utility that adds some useful features not only to traditional text editors but also word processors, browsers, e-mail clients, and any other program that handles text. It's unobtrusive and extremely handy to have around.

The program appears as an icon in the system tray, and right clicking it lets users access the options menu. The only real option the program has is … Read more

Match your browser to your bandwidth on Android

Some Android browsers deliver all the content, while others cut back for faster browsing. Choosing the correct browser for your connection type each time can become tedious--but there's a quick fix.

With Smart Browser Chooser, a free app on the Android Market, you can decide which browser is used based on your connection speed. All it takes is a couple minutes of setup and whether you're on Wi-Fi, 3G, or 2G, your Android device will know which browser to load for the best user experience.

Note: In order to use this app, you need … Read more

Now you can synchronize your Dolphins

The Dolphin browser has long been regarded as one of the best alternative Android browsers for its support of gestures, add-ons, Webzine, and swipe-to-switch tabs. Released today, Dolphin HD 7 (download) adds synchronization to that list. Like Firefox for Android and Opera Mobile for Android, which were the first Android browsers to gain syncing powers, the feature leverages data hosted in the cloud. Called Dolphin Connect, it lets you line up identical browsing preferences, bookmarks and gestures on all your Android devices running Dolphin.

Unlike Firefox, though, there's no desktop counterpart for Dolphin. Also, Dolphin Connect won't work … Read more

Dolphin dives into iPhones

The Dolphin Browser made a name for itself on Android, carving out a space as a zippy alternative to the default browser while rapidly building a robust feature set. Dolphin for iPhone, released today, brings most of those features to iPhone owners. The most notable one is gesture-based browsing, which makes it the only iPhone browser to support custom gestures.

Another interesting feature that Dolphin brings to the iPhone is its Webzine. It's the browser's in-house version of the streamlined, ad-free reading experiences that turn multipage stories on the web into a single vertical flow. Webzine includes works … Read more

Inside Apps: How to break into the business

When it comes to the mobile world, it's all about apps.

More than ever, people are using apps to augment the capabilities of their smartphones. They can remind you of your next meeting, play the latest Lady Gaga song, and make catapulting virtual birds into evil pigs a family pastime.

Likewise, they're increasingly important to the technology world. The apps market is expected to generate $9 billion in revenue this year and nearly double that next year, according to Gartner. The lack of apps, meanwhile, has crippled some smartphone platforms. Just ask Research In Motion and its BlackBerry … Read more
