Animatronic T. rex costume looks like it could eat you

Halloween is coming up. If your Superman Underoos aren't going to cut it for the eighth year in a row, then consider an animatronic life-size baby Tyrannosaurus rex costume from Wizart Studio instead.

The company crafts creatures for museums, but the T. rex was born to roam. It can be worn and operated by one person. Cable mechanisms trigger the detailed movements.

The 16-foot-long costume weighs just over 50 pounds. It's made from rubber, high-density foam, aluminum, and fiberglass. The textured outside makes it look wonderfully realistic. Holes in the body let the wearer see what's going on around it, such as people screaming and running away.… Read more

Rawr! 'Jurassic Park 3D' due next year

As Samuel L. Jackson's "Jurassic Park" character Ray Arnold says, "Hold on to your butts." Universal Pictures has announced that "Jurassic Park 3D" hits theaters on July 19, 2013.

When "Jurassic Park" arrived nearly 20 years ago, it served as one of the definitive visual spectacles of my generation (like "Star Wars" in the '70s).

The movie features many of the necessary ingredients in the ultimate-blockbuster recipe: Spielberg directing, solid acting, great script, and majestic orchestra pieces by John Williams. One could even say the animation and graphics hold ground to this day. … Read more

Oceans are acidifying faster than ever

The burning of fossil fuels and the release of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere don't affect just the air--it also impacts the Earth's oceans, according to U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).

Oceans absorb the carbon dioxide, which in turn changes the water's pH acidity levels. What this means is that coral reefs are growing at a slower rate and the survival of marine species is decreasing, according to NOAA.

Now, the speed at which ocean pH level is changing is faster than any time in the last 300 million years, according to a new … Read more

Buzz Out Loud 1414: Will Verizon doom the Xoom? (podcast)

Donald Bell joins us today to show off the Xoom in the flesh ... and yes, it's gorgeous, but is Verizon going to ruin it with high carrier prices and contracts? Molly lays down some shocking advice. Also, the new MacBook Pros have Light Peak, called Thunderbolt, Breakup Notifier gets the cold shoulder from Facebook, and the loosest adaptation of a true story we've ever heard. Good try, Battle L.A.

Crave 30: Bathroom achievement unlocked (podcast)

Crave veers toward several drool-worthy--and a couple cringe-worthy--topics this week. In fact, we can't seem to shake the curse of our food-friendly moniker as we check out eye-catching cereal boxes that light up on store shelves, a bus stop decked out to look like a toaster oven (complete with a people-warming electric heater), and an AT-AT that some intrepid soul turned into an ice cream truck piloted by Darth Vader himself.

Also, a ridiculous business offer leads to robot dinosaurs, and a game bows to mind control. Teetering on the edge of acceptability is a gaming urinal by Sega, with the boys finding it more relevant than Jasmine. What's not to crave? Whiskey in a can and BK's new jalapeno and cheddar BK Stuffed Steakhouse burger--ick.

Scientist says he can clone long-extinct mammoth

A Japanese scientist says he has a "reasonable chance" of successfully cloning the long-extinct woolly mammoth within just a few years, according to a report.

Professor Akira Iritani of Kyoto University told the U.K.'s Telegraph that a technique pioneered in 2008, which allowed for the cloning of a mouse using cells from another mouse that had been frozen for 16 years, could be used to resurrect the famous long-tusked mammal from remains found in Siberia's permafrost.

"The success rate in the cloning of cattle was poor until recently, but now stands at about 30 … Read more

Hey, interested in robotic dinosaurs from China?

So if you look just below the end of this post, you'll see my bio. All of us here at Crave have similar bios, including contact information. Consequently, we get a ton of e-mails. Some are from readers (and I'm sorry I don't have time to respond to them all). We also get e-mails from manufacturers in China.

Take this one I got this morning from what appears to be a Chinese manufacturer of dinosaurs named Alex. Here's the copy:

hello

I am China dinosaur factory .Hope that you know our product more .Also hope that we can establish long-term cooperative relation.

Thanks, Alex, sounds fun! But that's not the great part. The great part is the photos, one above, and the rest included below. … Read more

The 404 723: Where we eat a bacon explosion (podcast)

CNET's social-networking expert Caroline McCarthy fills in for Wilson and gives us her take on Mark Zuckerberg's appearance on "60 Minutes" Sunday.

We also discuss a variety of topics that include a $62,000 iPhone 4 encrusted with authentic dinosaur teeth and bits of meteor, a reboot to the original Tomb Raider video game, news on the forthcoming musical based on "American Psycho," and the real reason Wilson is currently in China.

Now that the New York Marathon is over, Caroline has the flexibility to indulge in food experimentation like the Bacon Explosion, which sounds like a meat lover's dream come true, except that Caroline is (mostly) vegetarian!

The Bacon Explosion was created by a Web site called BBQ Addicts, and consists of a 5X5 weave of bacon with bits of pork sausage sprinkled on top and fortified with even more bacon bits, all rolled into a disgustingly filling log of meat.

And since the holidays are coming up, why not skip the generic shirt, tie, robe, and socks gifts and ship your family the Bacon Explosion Pig-Porter that ships in its own piggy sleeve!

We're able to pull ourselves away from the images of bacon to chat about Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg's interview on "60 Minutes" with Lesley Stahl. Although not everyone was happy about his "performance," there's no doubt Zuckerberg has evolved as a CEO since his last interview with Stahl on "60 Minutes" three years ago.

On the show, Mark discusses the newest Facebook profile revisions, "The Social Network," and his relationship to Cameron and Tyler Winklevoss, the identical twins who accused him of stealing their idea for the original Facebook. Check out the face behind Facebook here!

Wilson is currently in China, but we're hoping he stops by the Wolong Giant Panda Reserve Center to join scientists as they dress up like giant Pandas to re-acclimate cubs back into the wild.

Although it's certainly more humanitarian, the panda plushies sound a lot like Furry Fandom, a phenomenon that takes interest in anthropomorphic animals and/or mythology creatures that are supposed to take on characteristics of the human being inside the costume. We'll leave the rest for Caroline to describe!

Enjoy the rest of the show, and don't forget to send your YouTube video messages to the404(at)cnet(dot)com, or leave us a voicemail by calling 1-866-404-CNET (2638)!
