Hangers with 'like' counts let Facebook dictate fashion

Why trust your own questionable fashion instincts when you can trust the questionable fashion instincts of everybody on Facebook? Brazilian retailer C&A has special clothes hangers that show how many likes each look has collected from the social-media community.

The counters built into each hanger, which are networked, update in real time to reflect the input of C&A's Facebook fans voting with their virtual thumbs on photos of each clothing item. C&A calls the system "Fashion Like."

This technology could be helpful in several ways. If you have outsider tendencies, then … Read more

Wear Repair: Anti-aging undies cover you with copper

The quest for the Fountain of Youth has never really gone away. On the more extreme end, we recently heard about FaceTime face-lifts. Those make CASS' Wear Repair line of anti-aging clothing sound somewhat reasonable.

Here's the premise. Wear Repair uses copper-infused fabric that claims to improve skin elasticity, reduce age spots, and give your skin a healthy glow. It is made from Cupron fabric that is 66 percent copper.

There are mentions on the CASS Web site of clinical trials of copper-enhanced fabrics. A little digging brought up a bibliography of studies on the biocidal effects of Cupron technology over at the Cupron site.… Read more

Muscle-covered leggings take the skin out of skintight

We've got just the tights to wear to your upcoming anatomy exam.

With these "Muscles Leggings"--whipped up by designer James Lillis for Black Milk Clothing--there's no way you'll fail (at least not when it comes to the waist-down part of the test).

Then again, it might be more fun to think about slipping into these the next time you visit one of those Body Worlds-type exhibits--you know, the ones with real flayed bodies riding horses or playing basketball? How many people would frantically hail a security guard to report an errant artifact?

Or you could don them for that other, hands-on anatomy class of yours--the one with the cadavers and instrument trays--and run teary-eyed to the instructor crying, "Damn it! I told you Bart needed glasses!"

The possibilities for pranking seem plentiful.… Read more

For a moment, antimicrobial Toddy cloth steals the show

LAS VEGAS--A considerable line of CES attendees who must have just imbibed their morning coffee is forming at the Toddy Gear booth. They're clutching what look to be colorful washcloths and feverishly wiping their various touch screens.

The Consumer Electronics Show is only halfway through, but in the right light these screens have obviously been stuck in some sort of fingerprint purgatory, perhaps not thoroughly scrubbed since long before being used voraciously in Vegas for directions, schedules, gossip, and who knows what else.

The fuss is over a product almost laughably simple, the 5x7-inch antimicrobial Toddy Smart Cloth, one … Read more

1986 Apple fan fashion flashback

There was once a decade when it was cool to have popped collars, leg warmers, and zippers on the ankles of your acid wash jeans. It was called the 1980s.

Even design-obsessed Apple wasn't immune from the decade's fashion fallacies. Fashion blog The Trad unearthed a 1986 Apple clothing catalog that looks like a collision between "The Breakfast Club" and an Apple II.

The catalog really sells the Apple computing lifestyle. "After a rough day windsurfing, the Apple sweatshirt is just the thing," it reads. Or you could buy a complete Apple-branded F2 America 360 Sailboard for just $1,100.… Read more

Hang tight! Clothes hanger gets modern makeover

I've had some epic battles with my closet clothes hangers. They're clingy and don't want to hand over my jackets, shirts, and sweaters without a fight.

I'm putting my hangers on notice. If they don't behave, I'm going to replace them with Quirky's collapsible SOLO hangers.

SOLO hangers are eager to please. A one-handed squeeze releases the locking mechanism and frees your clothes immediately.

Quirky is home to a community of inventors and supporters who come up with offbeat and practical gadgets and gear like pivoting power strips and cord tamers, lightbulb-shaped alarm clocks, and super-cute tripods.

The hanger reimagining comes courtesy of engineer Howard Tseng. It became reality with the backing of more than 300 Quirky users, known in the design collaborative as "influencers."… Read more

The Wal-Mart app for iOS does a great job laying out shopping categories for its huge inventory, letting you browse to items quickly. The interface includes categories on the left navigation bar that let you drill down to specifics, and a bigger window on the right to view results.
