Former Groupon CEO leaks outgoing memo: 'I was fired today'

Not waiting for a leak, newly ousted Groupon CEO Andrew Mason made his departing memo public this afternoon.

In it, Mason claims responsibility for missing expectations and the company's stock price, and says that a "fresh CEO" earns the company a chance at a second chance.

Mason also shows a geeky, youthful spirit, making the comparison of running the company this far to the popular, though notoriously difficult 1991 video game Battletoads.

Apple's Tim Cook sees his 2012 pay fall 99 percent

Apple CEO Tim Cook received only $4.2 million in compensation this year.

A proxy statement Apple filed today with the Securities and Exchange Commission revealed Cook's base salary as $1.3 million with non-cash compensation making up the rest.

In contrast, Cook was given $378 million in overall compensation last year and $59 million the previous year. But the lower total compensation is all part of a plan.

Verizon CEO Lowell McAdam isn't afraid of his competitors' efforts to raise their game; he welcomes the moves.

"My view is, bring that stuff on," he said during an investor conference today. "I mean, we have got a great network, and I think it will be good for consumers and so it is good for the industry."

First Tim Cook TV interview to air same day as Samsung hearing

Apple CEO Tim Cook will make his first TV appearance the same day his company could find out if it's getting a bevvy Samsung's smartphones permanently banned in the U.S.

Cook was interviewed earlier today at the company's Grand Central Terminal store by NBC's Brian Williams as part of a package that will air next Thursday, NBC announced today.

Photos of the interview were leaked out earlier by media tracking blog TV Newser, showing a casually dressed Cook chatting with Williams while holding Apple's products.

When Intel CEO Paul Otellini retires in May, he'll leave a mixed record.

On the one hand, Intel's processor manufacturing prowess remains second to none, with the company often introducing new miniaturization technology years ahead of rivals. As ever more companies withdraw from chip manufacturing, Intel manages to keep turning the crank profitably. During Otellini's reign, Intel has so far generated $107 billion in cash from operations and paid dividends of $23.5 billion.
