Cell phone talker: I'm too educated to be thrown off train

I have a skeptical view of education. It doesn't seem to be that those who have more of it necessarily become more interesting, or even more useful.

As my evidence, might I present this cell phone video, uploaded to YouTube, which shows an interesting and intellectual discussion between a conductor and a passenger on a Metro North train in New York.

It seems the woman might have been disturbing some passengers with the volume and vocabulary of her cell phone conversation. That would mirror an incident earlier this year when a woman was ejected from an Amtrak train after … Read more

Site fights retail bias against Windows Phone 7

I have a feeling that, one day, Windows Phones will become collector's items.

The really cool, retro-sensitive kids will be brandishing them as a status symbol, with potential lovers falling over themselves to be close to the owner of that simple, multicolored facade.

Robert McLaws, on the other hand, wants to prevent Windows phones from becoming retro cool. So he has created a site called Windows Phone Tattletale that places the blame for Microsoft's lack of telephonic success firmly into the untrustworthy bosom of retailers.

McLaws is a former Microsoft MVP for ASP.NET and Windows. (MVP stands … Read more

Will.i.am forgets lyrics, reads them from cell phone?

Cell phones were created so that we, the human race, could do many things at once. Thinking, writing, and eating, for example.

Your challenge today is to decide precisely what Will.i.am was using his cell phone for in this video.

What is clear is that he was singing on stage with the Belgian hip-hopperish singer Stromae. What is also clear is that the Black Eyed Peas singer looks at his cell phone while he is singing his own portion of their little mashup, a sweet lullaby called "Don't Stop the Party."

However, can we be … Read more

Report: Phones really could cause planes to crash

Have you ever forgotten to turn your cell phone off during a flight? Did you survive?

The question might seem slightly churlish, but the airline industry would like you to know that your little electronic devices--yes, just one of them--can really, truly, seriously mess with the aircraft's systems.

ABC News managed to get hold of a report by the International Air Transport Association that makes for very interesting reading. For it seems to link up to 75 incidents on planes with interference from cell phones or other electronic devices.

Rational minds will, no doubt, judge the evidence through their … Read more

Texting girl falls into fountain, Microsoft smiles?

Some events make us stop and think. Then there are the events that make us stop, think, laugh, and propagate until we can't think of anyone else to send them to. This, surely, is one of those events.

This enthralling video seems to have been posted to several sites (including YouTube), and it's become quite popular. It may well have originated at BuzzFeed, though it was sent to me by a kind reader who enjoys the handle Super2online. And can only hope that it is real. (It certainly seems to be.)

The video shows a girl wandering around … Read more

HTC phone battery stops bullet, saves life

Earlier this week, an Illinois man managed to leave his cell phone in his back pocket, a choice that ended up, thanks to his rolling bottom, with his wife calling the police, who sent a SWAT team to the man's place of work.

John Garber, a valet from an Atlanta nightclub might now be dead if he'd kept his cell phone in the same place.

According to the Associated Press, Garber was working at Club Halo when two men were thrown out of the club. Police say that the men allegedly ventured over to a car, grabbed some weapons and began to shoot indiscriminately in the direction of the club.

One of the bullets went through Garber's coat and was about to do him severe damage. Suddenly, it was intercepted by his HTC phone (yes, it was a Droid Incredible), which he had put into the chest pocket of his jacket.

Garber's coat is now adorned with a bullet hole. The top left corner of his red cell phone battery now enjoys a dent that signifies it wouldn't let the bullet through.… Read more

Phone-toting time traveler in Chaplin movie?

Roll up. Roll up. You won't believe your eyes.

No, I'm not launching a new Apple product (at least not yet). Instead, I would like you to scan a piece of footage for me and tell me what you see.

I would like you to examine a YouTube video that has been sent to me by various readers and eminences. It has already been viewed by more than 1.6 million people. And it shows Irish film director George Clarke declaring that he has seen an old woman--or a man in drag--in the 1928 Charlie Chaplin movie "The Circus."

Why might this be remarkable? I am sure even Chaplin himself might have donned a skirt at least at some point in his life. Ah, but this skirted individual, with a hardened Edward G. Robinson-type face, appears to be talking on a cell phone.

You did hear me right. She (or he) appears to be in possession of a mobile device and chatting into it. … Read more

Nasty, germy news for touch-screen devices

Now that people touch screens far more often than they touch each other, iPhones, iPads, and all the Droids and Nokias seem to have become the repositories of a huge number of nasties.

No, I am not referring to farting apps or movies with clothesless people. I am referring to those naked germs and viruses surely on so many people's minds as flu season starts.

The Sacramento Bee today offered vivid details that might make you look at the screen of your favorite gadget and wonder where it's been, as well as where you might choose to take … Read more
