Can Apps save the point-and-shoot?

My first thought when I saw the Casio Tryx camera announced at CES 2011 was that Casio took a smartphone and turned into a single-function device. It has the dimensions of a smartphone, has a 3-inch touch screen, and a fixed focal length lens similar to what's on a phone (though with better specs and quality). Take away the swiveling and rotating screen and lens design and you essentially have the body of a smartphone.

On top of that, one of the Tryx's key shooting features is high dynamic range (HDR) photos. HDR photography isn't new, but … Read more

Casio's Bluetooth watch will talk to your smartphone

LAS VEGAS--It's no LG Watch Phone, but Casio does stroll down that path with a networked watch it's revealing--in prototype form--at CES.

Embedded Bluetooth capabilities act as a second screen to let you view smartphone notifications like incoming calls and e-mails while your phone is elsewhere--deep in a bag or lost in your house, for instance. If you do misplace your device, there's a phone-finding feature that can ring your handset.

One handy-looking feature for travelers is a time sync that will reset your watch to local time once your smartphone picks that up from the local … Read more

HTC Shift Evo 4G clears FCC

It wasn't a huge week at the Federal Communications Commission, but there were two handsets worth mentioning. As Phonescoop reported, the Casio C771 should be an Android phone for Verizon Wireless, and we saw what should be the HTC Evo Shift 4G. Because the FCC has to certify every phone sold in the United States, not to mention test its SAR rating, the agency's online database offers a lot of sneak peeks to those who dig. And to save you the trouble, Crave has combed through the database for you. Here are a selection of filings from the … Read more

Hands on the rugged Casio G'zOne Ravine (video)

There's something both comforting and impressive about rugged phones built to military specification. Thick rubberized plastic cloaks many-a-sturdy cell phone, imparting the knowledge that you can easily grip it, drop it, and spray it with water without damaging the calling functionality.

The Casio G'zOne Ravine for Verizon updates the Rock before it, bringing many of the same physical features to this newer model flip phone--like push-to-talk. However, it updates the Rock on many counts, including a brighter design with sharp red accents, a 3.2-megapixel camera (bumped up from 2 megapixels), and dual speakers for improved noise cancellation. … Read more

Casio reveals the G'zOne Ravine

Casio continues to expand its rugged phone line with the G'zOne Ravine, a follow-up to other Casio handsets like the G'zOne Brigade and the G'zOne Rock. Like them, the Ravine is resistant to dust, water, shock, and a variety of environmental hazards. Casio is billing it as a phone for the outdoor enthusiast, especially with dedicated G'zGear apps that include a compass, a thermometer, the position and times of sunrises and sunsets, the astro calendar, tidal graphs, and more.

Other features of the Ravine include a 3.2-megapixel camera, text-to-speech and voice dictation, clear talk noise … Read more

Casio's H20G megazoom does geotagging indoors

Having tested all the latest GPS-enabled compact megazooms, I can tell you that holding onto a signal isn't easy, particularly in a city. Casio's Hybrid GPS in its Exilim EX-H20G announced today looks like it is up to task, though.

The Hybrid GPS system combines a GPS receiver with a motion sensor that allows for autonomic positioning. Should you lose your signal, a three-way accelerometer and a three-way direction sensor combine to keep track of your movements in relation to the last coordinate received. The camera can then continue to track and geotag your photos even if you'… Read more

New Casio Exilim will judge your golf swing

Point-and-shoots these days all have pretty much the same functions, with the exception of a rare few that have carved a niche for themselves. For example, Samsung's dual-LCD compacts are great for those who like to take self-portraits. For Casio, the company's latest camera, the Exilim EX-FC160S, is geared toward golfers.

This shooter employs a 10-megapixel backside-illuminated sensor, which lets golfers record videos at 240fps. This generates a slow-motion clip when played back at 30fps, and the Exilim will overlay lines on the screen to help you determine how good your swing is.

The snapper also has a … Read more

Digicam deluge: New cameras from Sony, Fujifilm, Panasonic, Samsung

As I mentioned back at the end of June, camera manufacturers are beginning to announce models for the second half of 2010. Sony, Fujifilm, Panasonic, and Samsung have made their announcements, three of them doing so early Wednesday morning.

Sony and Panasonic are launching mostly high-end models as well as a couple updates to older, popular models. Samsung refreshed its flagship DualView cameras and introduced a 7x zoom ultracompact for $180. And Fujifilm announced replacements to three models that were barely six months old as well as a significant update to its groundbreaking F200EXR.

Here are links to all the … Read more

Is your perfect camera coming soon?

The number of compact and ultracompact digital cameras available from major manufacturers is overwhelming--and it's about to get worse. Before summer's out, most of the companies will have announced a new batch of point-and-shoot models in an attempt to woo you into upgrading or at least penciling them into your holiday shopping budget. Judging by the reader e-mails I receive, none of the current crop seem to have all of the features you desire, so maybe some new options are exactly what's needed.

My fear, though, is it'll just be more of the same, with too … Read more
