Mac Malware Update: Unauthorized downloads of Snow Leopard infested with Trojans

Several Web sites have sprung up over the last couple days offering users free upgrades of Apple's latest operating system, Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard. Of course, these sites are socially engineered ploys to trick users into downloading malicious software.

Much like the iWork '09 and Adobe CS4 infected install packages we reported on in the spring, these Snow Leopard download sites are enticing users to get a free copy of the popular software, only to add a malicious version of a DNS Changer Trojan to their Mac.… Read more

Snow Leopard and system utilities

Written by Topher Kessler

If you use a variety of system utilities for cleaning your system, resetting caches, or doing numerous other operations to optimize your Mac, be sure to check with the developer before running them in Snow Leopard. Many are system-specific even though the developers may not say so, and could do more harm than good when run on an unsupported system.

You can search for your utility at VersionTracker, and if an update is available after Friday, August 28, then it will more than likely work; however, double-check that the update specifically mentions it works with "… Read more

Apple releases ODBC and Server Administrator tools for Snow Leopard

Written by Topher Kessler

When Apple released Snow Leopard they did not include the ODBC utility that was part of previous versions of OS X. Some people have relied on this for connecting to and administering various databases, and were concerned about it missing from Snow Leopard. In addition, the Administrator tools for Leopard did not function properly with the new OS.

Apple has released version 1.0 of this utility for Snow Leopard, but it is not available in Software Update. Instead, you can download it from Apple's download page (5.3MB): http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/apple/macosx_updates/odbcadministratortoolformacosx.htmlRead more

Running OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard: Initial Impressions and Review

Written by Topher Kessler

Take any used car and tune it up, put new tires and brake systems on it, and rebuild the engine and transmission. When you are done it will feel like a new car even though it looks the same. This is what Apple has done with Snow Leopard: Functionally, it is the same OS as we've all seen in Leopard besides a few new features, but under the hood things have been optimized to a great extent. While this has been discussed in great lengths by Apple and on Mac news sites, it is one … Read more

Apple Remote Desktop Client 3.3.1 update breaks screen sharing

Written by Topher Kessler

Some people who have applied the recent Remote Desktop Client 3.3.1 update have had problems with screen sharing between their Macs, with the connection being established properly but resulting in a blank window and no way to view the remote Mac.

Apple discussion poster "scottx" writes:

"I installed the Apple Remote Desktop 3.3.1 Client update when prompted by Software Update. I have never used Apple Remote management but use Screen Sharing all the time. The update successfully completed but now when I connect to my Mini from my PowerBook … Read more
