Consumers may potentially get an even bigger price break if Dish is able to snap up Sprint Nextel.

Dish's $25.5 billion unsolicited bid for Sprint certainly adds a wrinkle to Sprint's existing merger plans with Japanese wireless carrier SoftBank. But a deal with Dish may be a boon to consumers, particularly ones looking for a mix of video, mobile, and Internet services.

Dish founder Charlie Ergen is clearly a massive "Seinfeld" fan.

FCC: Sprint buyout decision likely on track for late May

Sprint's buyout by Japanese carrier Softbank should be right on track for a late May conclusion, Julius Genachowski, chairman of the Federal Communications Commission, hinted today.

Specifically, the FCC head said that his organization's review is on schedule with the typical 180-day review period, after which the FCC hands down a yay or nay decision. In this case, the 180-day count ends on May 29.

Chase denies hack behind sudden account drains

JP Morgan Chase denied this evening that it had suffered a hack that many customers claimed had suddenly reduced their checking account balances to zero.

After discovering the apparently empty accounts via the Internet or mobile devices, many Chase banking customers turned to Twitter to express their frustration and show screen shots of zero balances. Other users were greeted with messages that their bank account balances were unavailable.

But a spokesperson for the bank told CNET this evening that the problem was related to an internal issue and not a security breach.

Denial-of-service attack takes down JP Morgan Chase sites

The Web sites for banking giant JP Morgan Chase are offline this afternoon as the result of a distributed-denial-of-service attack, a representative told CNET.

The site's usual banking tools and content were replaced this afternoon with a message that said:

Our website is temporarily down, but our branches and Mobile Apps are available. Please try again later. The representative couldn't say how long the site had been down or how long it would be until service was resumed.

Verizon and Vodafone want to square away their long-standing relationship -- tied together by Verizon Wireless -- this year, according a report from Bloomberg.

Verizon Wireless, which is jointly owned by Verizon and Vodafone, has long been a source of questions over when the two telco giants would resolve the arrangement. In its latest salvo against the financial industry, Anonymous claims to have leaked sensitive information related to Bank of America executives and the company's alleged effort to "spy and collect information on private citizens."
