A decade ago, Bang & Olufsen started up its automotive division. Now it has hit the trifecta, partnering with Audi, BMW, and Mercedes-Benz, the three major German automakers.
At the 2010 Paris Motor Show, we saw examples of Bang & Olufsen stereo installations in the Audi A8, the BMW Concept 6-series Coupe, and the Mercedes-Benz S400 Hybrid.
Bang & Olufsen is a high-end Danish manufacturer of audio components, and has shown a flair for the dramatic in its automotive installations. Speakers rise up out of dashboards while grilles are made of brushed aluminum and include ambient lighting around the edges. … Read more
Some of the cool high-end laptops from Asus we saw way back at CES 2010 are finally ready to hit the streets, according to the company. These include interesting systems such as the Asus NX90J -- the Bang & Olufsen themed multimedia laptop we've been waiting for since January.
Asus NX90J Designed by Bang & Olufsen designer David Lewis, this 18.4-inch laptop has two giant touchpads -- one on each side of the keyboard. Highlights include a Core i7 CPU, 8GB of RAM, and 1.2TB of hard drive space. Available at the end of September, for $2,… Read more
DETROIT--At the 2010 Detroit auto show, we got a hands-on, and ears-on, demonstration of the 2011 Audi A8. As the A8 is Audi's flagship luxury sedan, it showcases the company's latest technologies. This latest model uses a touchpad for character recognition, making destination input much easier, gets an updated Bang & Olufsen audio system that reproduces music with near perfect staging, and later this year will also feature a UMTS data connection for Google map searches.
Audi has been steadily updating its Multimedia Interface (MMI) over the years, and introduced a third-generation MMI last year. Although Audi still … Read more
Looking to break away from the standard rules of laptop design, Asus has teamed with a subsidiary of Danish consumer electronics maker Bang & Olufsen (called Bang & Olufsen ICEpower) to create a multimedia system with some pretty unique features.
Designed by award-winning B&O chief designer David Lewis, through his David Lewis Designers studio, the Asus NX90 features a polished aluminum exterior and palm rest, contrasting nicely with a matte-black keyboard and twin touch pads.
If you're scratching your head at that last detail, the NX90 actually has two separate touch pads, and neither one is located in the traditional wrist rest location. Instead, the twin touch pads are situated on either side of the keyboard, representing another break from the typical laptop.
Of his design, Lewis says, "The customer wants a bigger laptop good enough to enter the living room and take the central position. The user cares about what he has in his house and does want to have quality items. Also, he may not be afraid to stand out a little from the crowd."
The concept is that you would use the two touch pads, one with each hand, to control the laptop in new ways. Asus says the touch pads "provide users with an intuitive DJ-like control," and work with Microsoft's Windows 7 multitouch gesture controls. Asus has a software suite it calls Rotation Desktop Control, which provides two-handed control for music and other media. … Read more

As Americans, many of us believe we'll be rich one day. Seriously, many of us believe it's only a matter of time before our ship comes rolling in and we'll be jet-skiing with bikini-clad models like the best of the rich folk.
Now there's a new reason to hold out hope. Bang & Olufsen just launched the BeoVision 4-103. It's an $111,805, 584-pound, 103-inch plasma TV with a full HD resolution of 1,920x1,080 pixels. A TV that says to the world, "Look what a huge tool I am, that I would spend over $100K on an f*****g TV." I think that may actually be engraved somewhere on the system.
Not to say B&O isn't throwing in the bells and whistles to get the hard sell for this TV. Other than the ginormous screen, there are a couple of features included that sound really cool.
First off, this is quite possibly the first and only TV with a built-in minicamera that evaluates your television every 100 hours, then automatically adjusts the color balance. … Read more
The Aston Martin DBS is a beautiful car, and sitting in one is a very special experience. Sitting in a DBS and listening to a Bang & Olufsen audio system takes that special experience and adds a choir of angels. The high-end Danish audio-components maker lends its expertise to Aston Martin with its Beosound DBS system, now coming as standard in the new DBS. At the 2008 Los Angeles Auto Show we sat in the DBS as a Bang & Olufsen representative played a variety of music through the system.
The car spun around on its turntable as a drum-and-bass … Read more
Apparently even Bang & Olufsen is feeling the effects of the sour economy. The Danish company, which has a built a reputation as a purveyor of high-end electronics, is exiting the cell phone business. The Financial Times reported Wednesday that besides phones, Bang & Olufsen will also stop making DVD players and recorders in an effort to concentrate on televisions and audio equipment.
Granted, it's not a huge loss to the cell phone world. The Bang & Olufsen Serene, which the company designed two years ago with Samsung, certainly had an intriguing design. But the phone faltered in functionality … Read more
Bang & Olufsen, a provider of high-quality audio and video products, has signed an agreement with Mercedes-Benz Cars to develop a premium sound system for Mercedes' AMG performance division. This would make Mercedes AMG the third major automaker, behind Audi and Aston Martin, to partner with the audio components provider.
A few weeks ago, we saw (or rather, heard) what Bang & Olufsen can bring to a vehicle's audio experience when we test drove the Audi A8 L W12. We also heard the kind of sounds Mercedes AMG is making under the hood of its vehicles when we judged … Read more
