As promised, Alienware launched its new x51 slim tower PC tonight, at a live event in San Francisco.

Features in the customizable system will include Intel Core i3, i5, i7 series processors, Nvidia GT and GTX graphics cards, a slot-loading DVD or Blu-Ray drive, internal Wi-Fi, and HDMI and 7.1 digital audio output. The starting price is $699, and it will be available to purchase on January 18.

Alienware looks poised to launch an affordable gaming desktop.

The PC maker itself has been promoting the reveal on its Alienware Arena Web site. You may also have seen a promotional video around the Web.

All the excitement these days may be centered around supersmall laptops, from ultraportable to ultrathin to ultrabook, but there's still a place for PCs on the opposite end of the spectrum. While 17-inch desktop replacement laptops with decent gaming performance are easy to find, if not exactly common, to truly move into the realm of mobile home entertainment center, there's nothing like an even-larger 18-inch screen. The high-end notebook graphics war is on for 2011. Nvidia was first to fire a shot a few weeks ago, unveiling the GeForce GTX 580M.

AMD has since counterpunched with the AMD Radeon HD 6990M, its new, most high-end laptop graphics card, which the company now claims, as Nvidia did weeks ago, is the "fastest notebook GPU." Today Nvidia unveiled its latest high-end laptop GPUs, the GTX 570M and 580M. That's not a huge surprise: the new GTX cards round out the "500 series" of GT and GTX graphics that have been available throughout the year. One feature Nvidia's particularly touting is the GTX 580's Optimus automatic switching, which should offer up "5 hours of battery life in Facebook," in case you measure your juice through social networking.
