Audi fleet testing A1 e-tron city car

Audi started testing its fleet of A1 e-tron Mega City Vehicle (MCV) in Munich. The Audi A1 e-tron is a pint-size 102-hp extended range plug-in that has a 31-mile electric range and uses a small, single-rotor Wankel to recharge the lithium ion battery to provide additional range 125 miles of range. The estimated fuel economy according to the draft standard for extended range vehicles is 123 mpg, but they may have to recalculate that number like GM will for the Volt.

Although the carmaker is rolling out only 20 A1 e-tron fleet vehicles, it's installing 200 charging stations for … Read more

CNET's Best of CTIA Awards

Another CTIA has come to an end, so it's time for CNET to pass out our Best of CTIA awards. We had to make a tough choice this year and break away from our traditional categories; because most of the major handset announcements in Las Vegas this year were smartphones (you can blame Android for that) we consolidated the traditional Best Phone and Best Smartphone categories into a category for Best Phone, plus a runner-up. We also couldn't find a worthy nominee for Best Software/Service so we did away with that category completely. So now, on to … Read more

Asus UL30A-A1: A thin-and-light worth buying

Whether CULV thin-and-light laptops will ever fully find a spot between the Netbook world and the full-featured laptop world, they are most definitely a category that's growing every day. Dropping an optical drive and throwing a low-voltage processor alongside a long-lasting battery is the trend of 2009, although the low-voltage laptops we've seen so far have often sacrificed either build quality, performance, or value-for-dollar.

It's relieving to say, therefore, that the 13-inch Asus UL30A-A1 is a thin-and-light that we'd gladly carry around in our bag for a long time to come. With a sturdy frame, a … Read more

Canon tweaks XH A1 and XH G1 for the new year

Updated 11/6 with clarification on complete enhancements. According to Canon, these models were updated in an analogous way to the XL H models.

Ever since it shipped almost exactly two years ago, the HDV-based Canon XH A1 has been a favorite among indie and event videographers. Rather than replace it, Canon has decided to buff it up a bit, along with its sibling, the more broadcast-oriented XH G1.

In addition to appending an "S" to the end of their names, the XH A1S and XH G1S primarily have some subtle operational tweaks. Canon redesigned the lens rings, … Read more

Toyota, Audi mull tiny cars for U.S.

PARIS--More than one European carmaker is on the verge of doing something it wouldn't have considered a few months ago.

They're thinking of selling very small and fuel-efficient cars to Americans--cars designed and developed with only Europe in mind.

Two small cars that debuted at the Paris show are under consideration for the United States. One is the Audi A1 Sportback Concept, which is about 10 inches shorter than Audi's A3. The production version could hit U.S. shores.

"A year ago, I would have said no," said Peter Schwarzenbauer, Audi's worldwide sales and … Read more
