Microsoft smooths out some of SkyDrive's rough edges

Better mobile support and more desktop options give SkyDrive users a bit of a boost today, as Microsoft updates its cloud storage service.

The desktop improvements include the ability to share SkyDrive files with one click from Windows 8's File Explorer (also known as Windows Explorer in previous versions of Windows,) and selectively sync folders from a Windows or Mac. This can help keep small-drive devices from filing up too quickly.

Android and Windows Phone apps have been updated, too, so that you can now more easily browse files in your SkyDrive. You'll also be able to control … Read more

Microsoft's SkyDrive accidently freezes out Opera users

After a SkyDrive debacle over the weekend, which caused Opera users to be blocked from the cloud storage service, Microsoft has said it's working quickly to fix the problem.

The problem began when Opera, which is a Web browser, received a bug report showing that Microsoft's cloud storage service froze out all users when it was being loaded. Instead of being able to see their saved files and photos, users could only see millions of characters of code.

After some poking around, Opera's Hallvord Steen realized that the problem was "some strange bug in the Microsoft … Read more

How to use SkyDrive.com's new recycle bin

Microsoft's SkyDrive cloud storage service has always kept previous versions of Office documents, but other file types had no redundancy options available when using the SkyDrive Web interface. With these non-Office file types in mind, Microsoft recently added a recycle bin feature to provide restore options for all files.

To get to the recycle bin, click on the new Recycle Bin link, located at the bottom of the left pane, just above Manage storage. If you don't have the link yet, it should roll out to your account soon. Once in the recycle bin, select one or more … Read more
