Android bumps lead over Apple's iOS on ad network

Android continues to up its lead over Apple's iOS, according to the latest Mobile Mix report from ad network Millennial Media.

Google's OS captured 61 percent of all ad impressions on the mobile ad network in July, a healthy gain from 54 percent the prior month. On the flip side, Apple's iOS lost some share last month, dropping to 21 percent of all impressions from 26 percent in June. Android has held onto its leading spot for the past eight months since overtaking iOS this past January.

Android stayed atop its perch as the leading mobile OS on Millennial Media's ad network last month, though Apple continues to shine as the top device maker.

Looking strictly at mobile platforms, Millennial Media's June Mobile Mix report found Android on top with 54 percent of all ad impressions last month. In second place was Apple's iOS with a 26 percent share. Both results were little changed from May but showed Android's growing dominance since it overtook iOS on the ad network last December.

Android ups lead as ad network's top mobile platform

Android increased its lead over Apple's iOS in April as the top mobile platform tracked by ad network Millennial Media.

Releasing its April MobileMix report today, Millennial Media found that Android accounted for 53 percent of all ad impressions on its network last month, a gain of 10 percent from March. That marked the fifth consecutive month in which Google's mobile OS was the leader.

Android's growth in April came at the expense of both iOS and Research In Motion's BlackBerry OS.

Verizon iPhone boosts Apple's ad network share

Google's Android is still the leading mobile operating system on Millennial Media's ad network, but Apple's iOS regained some lost ground in March thanks to the growth of the Verizon iPhone.

Rising by 11 percent since February, iOS captured 31 percent of all ad impressions on the network, according to Millennial Media's latest MobileMix report out today. That marked the first solid gain for iOS since it started shedding share to Android on the mobile network late last year.

Android still No. 1 smartphone OS on ad network

Android led smartphone platforms last month with a 51 percent share of all ad impressions tracked by mobile ad network Millennial Media, according to its Mobile Mix report released today.

That number was down a few percentage points from January but still surpassed the 27 percent grabbed by Apple's iOS. But Apple and iOS took the top spot in other areas.

Among other major players, Research In Motion's BlackBerry OS claimed 17 percent of all impressions, leaving Nokia's Symbian with 2 percent and Microsoft's Windows Mobile with just 1 percent.

For January, Google's mobile OS captured 54 percent of all ad impressions seen on smartphone platforms on the network, up from 46 percent in December. At the same time, the share of impressions held by Apple's iOS fell to 28 percent from 32 percent the prior month.

Survey: Most homes own at least one tech gadget

Almost all American homes now own at least one tech gadget, according to a new study released yesterday by Pew Internet.

In its "Generations and their gadgets" report, Pew revealed that 85 percent have their own mobile phones, while 90 percent live in a household with at least one working cell phone.

Pew based its findings on a survey of 3,001 Americans ages 18 and older that was conducted between August 9 and September 13.

Though mobile phones were by far the most popular gadgets, computers were also near the top of the list, with desktops owned by 59 percent and laptops by 52 percent of those polled. Drilling down, desktops are still more common than laptops among virtually all age groups expect the younger crowd. Among adults 18 to 34, 70 percent own a laptop compared with 57 percent who have a desktop.… Read more

Android outshines Apple iOS on mobile ad network

Android has surged ahead of Apple for the first time as the most popular smartphone OS, according to Millennial Media's mobile ad network.

In Millennial Media's December report, Google's mobile operating system won 46 percent of all ad impressions (the number of times an ad is displayed), compared with 32 percent for Apple's iOS. In November, the two operating systems were neck and neck at 38 percent each.

Apple and Android continue to duke it out for the top spot on Millennial Media's ad network.

Each of the two competing platforms captured 38 percent of all smartphone ad impressions (how often an ad appears) in the U.S. for November, according to Millennial Media's "November Mobile Mix Report." That number reflects a 1 percentage point gain in ad impressions for both Apple and Android from October's results following Android's 6 percentage point gain and Apple's 9 percentage point drop from September.

Android is now running neck and neck with Apple's iOS as the largest U.S. smartphone platform on the Millennial Media mobile ad network.

The number of mobile ad impressions (how often an ad appears) in the U.S. for Android jumped 8 percent in October over September, according to Millennial Media's "October Mobile Mix Report."
