Ever since hybrids became popular, with the second generation of the Toyota Prius, the question arose of whether the fuel savings justified a hybrid car's higher price. The extra expense for a hybrid car has been called the hybrid premium.
The extra cost for a hybrid car comes from the additional equipment in the driveline. Along with the gas engine, hybrid cars have an electric propulsion motor, a high-voltage battery pack, and a power control module, this latter component determining how to feed electric power into the drive system.
Now, with many automakers offering some type of hybrid car, … Read more
The inherent frugality of a hybrid car might make you think of a no-frills driving experience. But luxury automakers have learned the win-win nature of an electric-assisted power train.
Infiniti, Porsche, and BMW devised their own takes on the hybrid car, fitting these fuel-efficient systems into full-size sedans and SUVs. Lincoln borrowed a hybrid system from sister brand Ford for its own midsize sedan, the MKZ. And Lexus even transferred the Prius hybrid power train into a luxury hatchback.… Read more

DETROIT--Sexy new cars should come with some sizzle, but when they start to smoke, caveat conceptor.
That was the case at the 2012 North American International Auto Show when the new Lincoln MKZ sedan concept began puffing away while on a tilted stage.
It happened while a lovely lady was posing for photos by the MKZ's driver-side door for a New York Times photographer. Tendrils of smoke suddenly began wafting up from the panel.
I hate to say cherchez la femme, but perhaps she was a little too lovely.
The smoke turned into a veritable column, and in moments Lincoln staff were all over the MKZ, ushering journalists away from the vehicle. … Read more
LOS ANGELES--Lincoln hits the 2011 Los Angeles Auto Show with a one-two punch, unveiling the 2013 MKS sedan and MKT crossover simultaneously.
The most prominent change to these two 2013 Lincolns is the new design language. Lincoln has simplified and restyled the waterfall grille into something that can only really be described as a windswept mustache. Twin grilles with vertical bars sweep back into integrated headlamps. Meanwhile, the front fenders and hood have been simplified with fewer creases and kinks. I think the MKS wears the look better, partially due to its more compact size. In either case, the result … Read more
Jim Farley, Ford Motor's global marketing chief, will dive deeper into social media to promote new products.
Ford will launch three electric vehicles next year. It also will introduce several 2013 models with conventional engines, including a restyled Taurus sedan, redesigned Escape crossover, and redesigned Fusion midsize sedan. And its luxury brand, Lincoln, gets new and redesigned models, too.
Farley, 49, says he's prepared to use digital marketing, and especially social media, to promote these vehicles.
Farley discussed these and other marketing issues with Industry Editor James B. Treece and Staff Reporter Jamie LaReau.

Lincoln will have seven new or improved products by 2014, Ford Motor Co. has promised Lincoln dealers. Ford's global product chief, Derrick Kuzak, has said Ford will show some new or refreshed Lincoln products this year.
As Lincolns are redesigned, they will be differentiated from Ford models not only by their technology but by sheet metal, their wheelbase, and the length of the front and rear overhangs. Some models will get unique power trains paired with eight-speed transmissions.
Here are highlights for Lincoln's 2012-14 model years.

Ford will make its new inflatable seat belt an option on the Flex and Lincoln vehicles starting next summer.
The high-tech pretensioner contains an airbag that deploys in the event of an accident and expands to cover five times more of the occupant's torso than a traditional belt. By diffusing crash pressure over a larger area, the new belt helps reduce the risk of injury to backseat passengers.
"This advanced restraint system is designed to help reduce head, neck, and chest injuries for rear-seat passengers, often children, and older passengers who can be more vulnerable to such injuries," said Sue Cischke, Ford group vice president of Sustainability, Environment and Safety Engineering. … Read more
