Angry Birds tangible slingshot controller lets you get hands-on

It's the app game that won't go away. Angry Birds Space is still sitting pretty on the App Store's top paid apps chart, but how many times can you pull back a virtual slingshot before you start pining for something more?

Students at the Copenhagen Institute of Interaction Design have given Angry Birds a whole new dimension with the creation of a physical slingshot controller for the desktop version of the game. … Read more

Angry Birds to land on Samsung TVs

After soaring into the PC and mobile world, Angry Birds is flapping into its next arena -- smart TVs.

Samsung today announced the launch of a new Angry Birds app (English translation) designed for certain of its smart TVs.

Tapping into Samsung's Smart Interaction gesture recognition, game players will be able to use gestures and voice commands to target the angry birds in their battle against the pigs.

Due out sometime this month, the Angry Birds app will be compatible with Samsung's smart TVs ES7000, ES8000, and ES9000. Taking advantage of Samsung's newly-updated Smart TV SDK, the … Read more

Keep a calendar on your desktop with Interactive Calendar

Not that very long ago a desktop calendar was a big paper thing that sat on top of your desk (sometimes under your typewriter). Now it's typically a piece of software like Interactive Calendar. This attractive program makes it easy to view a calendar on your computer desktop and keep detailed records of upcoming events. We think it's a nice option if you want something more comprehensive than the built-in Windows calendar but don't want to use the calendar that's integrated into your e-mail client.

Interactive Calendar has a sleek, customizable interface. The calendar is meant … Read more

Torch-tracking map humanizes spectacle of Olympics

Wow, are the Olympics here again already? It seems like just yesterday we were all gasping over the opening ceremony in Beijing.

But yes, they're here, or will be as of July 27 (in London of course). And mapping-software company ESRI has provided the technological muscle behind a nice little Web site that could help you wake up to the coming arrival of the games and get your Olympic juices flowing (along with your feelings of international brother- and sisterhood).… Read more

TV apps? No one except TV makers seems to care

PARIS--Feeling bad for all the TV manufacturers with ailing TV businesses? Maybe you should try those apps that came with that new flat screen.

The basic problem with the TV business is that there's very little a manufacturer can do to stand out from the crowd, said Tom Morrod, an IHS television analyst speaking the analyst firm's Technology, Media and Telecommunications (TMT) Summit here. Manufacturers try to differentiate by adding apps and other higher-level services, but customers consistently care chiefly about price, screen size, and image quality.

"TVs are used to watch video, and that's pretty … Read more

Indie games steal the spotlight this spring

Sure, the future of gaming may see the end of used games, but it's also ushering in a wave of independent and download-only titles that may not have otherwise seen the light of day.

Current-generation consoles have provided independent studios with accessible platforms like Xbox Live Arcade (XBLA) and the PlayStation Network (PSN) that exposes their work to millions of gamers, similar to what the App Store has done for iOS developers.

Microsoft has even taken it a step further with its XNA initiative, ensuring that literally anyone can create a game.

The widespread embrace of these titles has encouraged others to follow suit and has paved the way for indie classics like Braid, LIMBO, Bastion, Minecraft, and most recently, Journey.… Read more

Firm that makes tech for museum displays sues Apple over touch

A company that designed touch-screen technology in the mid-'90s for use in video displays for museum exhibits and the like has sued Apple, saying the iPad, iPhone, and other devices infringe on one of its patents.

Villanova, Penn.-based Flatworld Interactives filed a lawsuit yesterday in the United States District Court for the Northern District of California saying that Apple infringed on U.S. Patent No. RE 43,318, which, according to a release from Flatworld law firm Hagens Berman, "includes claims to touch-screen based systems that allow users to manipulate images using gestures, such as selecting an … Read more

A sexy interactive whiteboard? The Penveu could be it

Interactive whiteboards are one of those unsexy business tools that companies everywhere depend on. All told, it's a $1.8 billion market that might seem to some to be one of the stodgiest around.

But a 38-year-old company on the hunt for a new business thinks it has found a way to upend that market. At the Demo conference this week, Interphase is unveiling its Penveu interactive whiteboard device, a tool that gives businesses an inexpensive, easy to use, and portable alternative to options out there today that can cost $2,000 to $7,000.

All that's needed … Read more

Samsung Smart Interaction: Hands-on with voice and gesture control

At CES this year one of the most interesting announcements involved Samsung's Smart Interaction, a new feature on its 2012 TVs that utilizes a built-in camera and microphone to enable you to control the boob tube just by speaking and/or gesturing to it. I've spent the last few days doing just that, much to the amusement of my co-workers, and boy are my arms (and at least one finger) tired.

My takeaway? Smart Interaction has promise but feels half-baked and more like a gimmick than a compelling upgrade. Once the novelty wears off, its usefulness is limited (at best) to those times you don't have a remote in-hand. … Read more

Mechanize your bling with robotic rings

Next time you're tempted to flip someone off, these robotic rings might help you get the message across.

The prototype rings consist of motorized eyes and a mouth. Developers from Japan's Keio University showed them off at Interaction 2012 last month in Tokyo, along with a whack of other nutty notions like cyborg houseplants.

The idea is to promote wearable robots and expand the natural expressive abilities of hands. … Read more
