TweetDeck tweaked to handle 'high-velocity' tweets

If you happened to have set up a TweetDeck column to filter tweets with the "#Debate" hashtag during any of the recent presidential or vice-presidential debates, you may well have had the same experience I did: the application crashing under the weight of thousands and thousands of posts per second.

With Twitter becoming a bigger and bigger part of mainstream culture, there are an increasing number of big events that generate huge numbers of tweets, and today the microblogging company announced it is attempting to address the dynamic of TweetDeck buckling when those events generate incredible amounts of … Read more

Tweet failures plaguing Twitter's official apps

Twitter users are reporting problems receiving tweets in their official Twitter apps this afternoon.

In a post to its official status blog, Twitter acknowledged the issue, saying: "Some users may be experiencing a delay with new tweets in their timelines. Our engineers are currently working on this issue."

A search for "Twitter app" reveals a lot of unhappy people, though people using clients like TweetDeck seem to be having no problems.

In recent days, there's been much talk of the end of the so-called "fail whale" in light of Twitter's performance having … Read more

TweetDeck tweaks its Web site and desktop apps

As part of Twitter's ongoing efforts to revamp TweetDeck, the Twitter client rolled out an update today that lets users change the appearance of the application.

Users of the Twitter-owned TweetDeck, can now adjust the color scheme of the application from the traditional dark background to a lighter theme by toggling a switch on the top toolbar. Additionally, the dark background is "clearer and cleaner," according to the TweetDeck blog.

Users can also change the size of the font in the settings pane.

The update is live online, and was rolled out to Chrome, Mac and Windows … Read more

Be up-to-date

TweetDeck for Mac now ships with a brand-new, well-designed user interface and a Twitter-for-Mac-like look, and it has multiple additional features that power users will love. By switching to HTML5, the developers have eliminated the need to continuously update Adobe Air, and now users can enjoy a neat app for reading, tweeting, and searching for specific topics of interest.

We liked how simple to use TweetDeck is. As soon as you set up your Twitter (or Facebook) account, you are off. While Twitter for Mac does a very good job for everyday use, it can't compete with this app'… Read more

Deck: An iPad music app for people with big fingers

iPad users challenged by the Music app's tiny controls may appreciate an alternative audio player dubbed Deck.

Selling for $1.99 in the Apple Store, Deck provides a large interface with simple features and big controls so you don't need to struggle to manage and play your favorite music. I've been using the app frequently since Apple -- in my opinion -- screwed up the tablet's Music app with iOS 5.

Launching Deck displays its hefty audio player with all the standard buttons--Play, Pause, Back, Forward, Volume, and more. You tap on the Menu button to … Read more

TweetDeck update restores some features, adds new ones

Twitter finally has begun to update TweetDeck, with a major release today. It restores some features that had been pared away during December's beak-to-tail-feather overhaul, and brings a couple of new ones along for the ride, too.

TweetDeck 1.3 (download for Windows and Mac) brings back media previews, list management, and the previous retweeting style. It also introduces the Activity and Mentions columns to the desktop client, pulling it into parity with the Web site and mobile apps.

In its blog post announcing the update, Twitter revealed that it replaced the "Quote" retweet option with the … Read more

TweetDeck drops AIR, goes native

The new TweetDeck (download for Windows and Mac) has launched, and it's the first version since Twitter bought the company. There's a new logo and blue skin to reflect that, but far bigger changes happened under the hood.

It's not entirely clear when the new versions were released, since Twitter didn't announce them, but the company has completely abandoned the old program. Gone is the cross-platform program built on Adobe AIR, and gone are many of its features. In its place, Twitter has built two new programs native to Windows and Mac, respectively, and streamlined their … Read more

Twitter to newbies: Try it, you'll like it

PARIS--Power users have criticized Twitter's new design, but the company made its choices carefully about what to spotlight and what to hide in the new interface.

"When you're trying to simplify a product, you have to make some tough decisions," said Ryan Sarver, Twitter's director of platform, at the LeWeb conference here today. Thus, direct access to direct messages and Twitter user lists got pushed deeper into the interface.

"They are still one click away and part of the product," Sarver said. "We wanted to focus on the main timeline, the ability … Read more

Best Twitter apps for iOS

Unless you've been living under a rock (or maybe just don't read tech news) you probably already know that next Tuesday, October 4, is when Apple makes its next major announcement. While the company is tight-lipped as usual, we know that it will probably announce at least one new iPhone and when it plans to launch iOS 5, the operating system that powers the iPhone, iPod Touch, and iPad.

One of the big known features of the new iOS is Twitter integration. Apple generally does a great job of creating intuitive interfaces for just about everything and what we've learned of Twitter on the iPhone sounds great, as you'll be able to tweet directly from Safari, Photos, YouTube, and Camera. But if you're a serious Twitter user, you're still going to need a third-party app to get all that Twitter has to offer.… Read more
