Mouse-Click-O-Matic

Free Mouse Auto Clicker? Calm down, Sylvester: It's not "free mouse," it's freeware that automatically generates mouse clicks or hotkeys at intervals ranging from one-tenth of a second to 100 hours. It can simulate single or double clicks for the right or left mouse button and start or stop any combination of hotkeys from Ctrl + F1 through F12. What's it good for? It can repeatedly click a button, interface, or window to keep an app, document, or process from closing, for example, or automate repetitious clicks, or start and stop processes via hotkeys.

Video directory Clicker gets a set-top version

At the Google I/O conference Wednesday, Clicker (original review) is releasing a new version of its Web-based video directory at the new site Clicker.tv. The old Clicker.com site stays for all you traditionalists who like text-heavy sites you navigate with a mouse. The new one is designed for the "10-foot experience," which is code for the Google TV set-top box we're all expecting to see at the conference today.

I tried a preview of the Clicker.tv site in Firefox (it wasn't quite working in Chrome when I got access). The site points … Read more

A truly universal remote

You already know how much I love 2-in-1 appliances and gadgets. Generally, the best dual-purpose devices combine two things that, when you see them together, make you take notice and wonder why it's taken this long for the world to come this far. The ones I enjoy writing about most, though, are often those that make me shake my head and say, "What the heck were they thinking?"

And the latest entry in the "Seriously, I can't decide if this is brilliant or pathetic" category, we have the Clicker, a universal remote control...with … Read more

Online-video guide snags $11 million in VC funding

Clicker, an online TV Guide-like service for Web videos, announced Thursday that it has secured $11 million in venture funding.

The series B round was led by Jafco Ventures. Benchmark Capital and Redpoint Ventures also participated. The company has now raised approximately $19 million since its launch in January 2009.

According to the company, it plans to use the money to invest in engineering and supporting partnerships.

Clicker, whose service went live in November, doesn't attempt to be a Hulu killer or YouTube competitor. Instead, the company provides a comprehensive guide to Web television. Its catalog includes more than … Read more

Maddening mouse clicker

Simple Clicker claims to offer users an easier way to click though programs. While it does perform its auto-clicking task, we found this program virtually pointless and, worse, completely unhelpful, even disastrously so.

Its interface, while simple to operate, provides no onscreen navigation and was not particularly intuitive. Its Help file was equally sparse and actually left the program's main functionality undefined. Simple Clicker's interface only features a START and STOP button and a speed slider bar. After some experimenting, we realized this program imitates a user constantly clicking a mouse so that whatever the cursor is over … Read more

Boxee gets Clicker app, but not all Clicker data

Just a few days ahead of the scheduled public beta launch of media app Boxee on Monday, the excellent Clicker Internet video directory has been ported to the platform.

To review: Boxee is a media viewing app designed for living room use--that is, at a distance, with a remote control. It's a good interface for sources like YouTube, Netflix, CNN, and CBS (our publisher), as well as music, home movies, and photos. We've covered it a lot and quite like it.

Clicker, which we also like, is an extremely well-curated directory of streaming television shows. Clicker on Boxee … Read more

Podcast: Clicker CEO on discovering Internet video

Clicker CEO Jim Lanzone spoke with Larry Magid about the new service which he says is part search engine, part directory, part wiki (because users will help them edit) and "what the TV Guide of the next generation needs to look like."

Clicker launches for all--watch it

The online video directory service Clicker launches Thursday at the NewTeeVee Live conference. If you watch TV, you will love this site.

Clicker is not a full-on video search engine like Bing or Google, and it's not a video-viewing site like Hulu. It is, instead, a carefully curated directory of full-length video content, with several extremely nice features and user interface flourishes that make it a good first stop online if you're looking for an episode of your favorite show to watch.

Unlike a search engine, Clicker won't give you every last shred of online video on … Read more

Back to the future: 1939 wireless remote control!

If you're under 40, you might think TVs always had remotes. The early ones were called "clickers," "channel changers," or "selectors."

Sure, there were TV remotes as early as 1956, notably the Zenith Space Command, but remote-controlled TVs didn't really enter the mainstream until the 1970s.

It's true that there weren't many channels from which to choose at that time, but changing channels or volume without a remote was a matter of getting up from the sofa, walking over to the set, and turning big, clunky knobs on the TV.… Read more
