Battlefield 3's first expansion explodes onto scene

Battlefield 3's first downloadable content, Back to Karkand, debuted exclusively yesterday for the PlayStation 3.

Soldiers using PCs and Xbox 360 devices will have to wait until December 13 to access the pack, which costs $14.99 (or 1,200 Xbox points). Many gamers who preordered Battlefield 3 Limited Edition automatically received Back to Karkand free, so this will be a nice change of scenery for those already tired of playing. … Read more

Big update lands for Battlefield 3

A half-gigabyte update has dropped for the PC version of Battlefield 3, adding many performance fixes and gameplay adjustments for a better experience. The same update will roll out soon for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 versions of the game.

On the short list of fixes, fraggers should see improvements with loading times and general performance. The dreaded "black screen" error--which would sometimes happen when loading a new map during multiplayer--should be resolved. Players who joined multiplayer and co-op games should also see fewer crashes.

With the new patch, multiple monitor setups should now run more smoothly. Visual corruption errors are now less of an issue on certain Nvidia graphics cards, but in my experience playing today with a GTX 560 I actually saw fewer graphical issues than I had ever seen before. I was using a set of beta drivers, so I need to do further testing with this before I can say anything definitive. There's also word that loading times for some textures have improved, but I doubt that you'll be able to notice it. … Read more

Battlefield 3 contest hard to miss

Battlefield 3's multiplayer mode is hugely addictive; just ask my girlfriend, who has become a keyboard widow. Now I come to find out EA and DICE will actually financially reward people like me for logging in to the game next weekend.

While Battlefield 3 is the hot ticket right now, the looming shadow of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3, Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, and several other major titles is just around the corner.

In what we're guessing is a response to any potential BF3 interest that may wane when those games arrive, EA and DICE are holding a Battlefield 3 "Says Thanks" sweepstakes. Eligibility is simple, and mostly anyone can enter by simply logging in to the multiplayer portion of the game on Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 or PC from November 11 to 13. … Read more

'The Controller' embraces tropes, fails to impress

"The Controller" takes six hard-core and/or professional gamers and makes them compete in a video game contest with Battlefield 3 as the game of choice. Instead of using their own hand dexterity to play, however, in an interesting, Shyamalan-like twist, each gamer must instead train one of six newbs to play the game well enough to beat the rest of the newbs and win $50,000.

It's the experts-training-newbs premise that immediately makes the concept of the show much more interesting than simply watching highly skilled gamers battling even more highly skilled gamers.

With the training aspect, I saw an opportunity to dive deeply into a hard-core video game and get insight and details concerning the concepts of higher-level play with the side benefit that the uninitiated would see just how cool and deep games that reward a high skill level can be.… Read more
