Ericsson has big plans to connect the world (live blog)

LAS VEGAS--Ericsson CEO Hans Vestberg has a grand vision to get a connected device--or two or three--into the hands of every person on this planet. And he laid it out here at the Consumer Electronics Show, in a keynote address that barely managed to touch on consumer technology at all.

Hey, no one said infrastructure--particularly communications infrastructure--is easy.

Ericsson doesn't have the sexiest business in the world--it supplies telecommunications equipment and manages wireless networks--but its business is crucial to the consumer's increasingly mobile lifestyle. As a result, the company's perspective on mobile's future was intriguing, if … Read more

Sony Ericsson teases its upcoming CES smartphone

How does a lesser-known brand generate some pre-CES buzz? Why, with the ever-popular Facebook tease, of course.

Sony Ericsson is the latest to reveal a sneak peek of a smartphone it plans to reveal at CES next week through the channel of its official Facebook page.

The four images are intentionally hard to make out, but what is clear is that the handset will have HD photo and video capability, and will come equipped with a dedicated camera button.

Underneath the montage, the company's Facebooker wrote, "Just a few more days until we can reveal some interesting news--what do you want it to be?"

Signs point to a new Xperia Arc at the other end of the big reveal, specifically the dual-core "Nozomi," or Xperia Cloud, that we first learned of in early December. That Android device is expected to pack a dual-core 1.5GHz processor, a 720p HD resolution display, and a whopping 12-megapixel camera.

We'll find out soon enough either way.… Read more

We've been waiting to see Sony Ericsson's dual-core smartphone for quite a while now (the company has only released single-core handsets this year).

Box offering 50GB of free storage to LG, Sony Ericsson customers

Cloud-based storage service Box is in a generous mood this holiday season.

The company announced new partnerships with LG and Sony Ericsson today, and effective immediately, anyone who owns an LG smartphone running Android 2.1+ will receive 50GB of free storage when signing up for an account.

The generous amount of cloud-based hosting far exceeds the 5GB of Dropbox storage that HTC recently began offering their customers and lasts the lifetime of the account. However, LG owners must sign up for an account using their handset before March 31, 2012, when it's expected that the storage will go back down to the 5GB plan. … Read more

Sony Ericsson Xperia phones out in U.S., if you can find them

Two Sony Ericsson Android phones made their debut in the U.S. today, although they are only available through the Sony Store.

The handset manufacturer unveiled the Xperia Arc S and the Xperia Neo V. The Arc S is $549.99 and the Neo V is $349.99, and both come unlocked.

That the two phones are hitting the U.S. shores only through Sony's stores is indicative of Sony Ericsson's recent struggles in the U.S. Smartphones that are sold without carrier support typically languish in the market or remain niche items for gadget enthusiasts.

Greenpeace puts HP in top spot in greener-electronics guide

HP is now the top-ranked tech company, according to Greenpeace's latest guide to greener electronics.

The guide's criteria has been updated to take into greater account energy use, conflict minerals, green products, and supply chain energy use.

Greenpeace released its latest rankings today, showing HP moving ahead three to the top spot. It's a big leap considering that just six years ago HP was targeted by Greenpeace as one of the worst tech companies for using fire retardant materials suspected of being hazardous. At the time, Greenpeace members stood outside of HP's headquarters and handed out … Read more

Sony's smartphone play: Too little, too late

For Sony and its handset ambitions, it may be too little, too late.

The Japanese consumer electronics giant is ending its 10-year marriage with network-equipment provider Ericsson, spending $1.47 billion to buy out Ericsson's stake in Sony Ericsson, their mobile devices joint venture.

Sony's hope: that it can move faster alone to revive what was once a healthy business through a tighter integration with its other products and media content.

While many analysts agree Sony's takeover of the business is a positive, they are skeptical that it can actually turn the handset business around. Over the … Read more
