Samsung reveals Galaxy S LTE and Galaxy Tab 8.9 LTE prior to IFA

We knew that Samsung had something up its sleeve for IFA later this week in Berlin, but the company has let the news slip a little early in a press release issued today. As expected, we'll not only get a version of the Galaxy S II, but also we'll see the return of the Galaxy Tab 8.9.

The Galaxy S II LTE smartphone will feature a 1.5GHz dual-core processor and Android 2.3 Gingerbread. The 4.5-inch Super AMOLED display will offer 3D graphics, though its size also means the device will be far from compact.

Additional features include Wi-Fi, e-mail, and messaging, an 8-megapixel camera, a personal organizer, a digital music player, Bluetooth, and the usual access to Google apps. And as its name suggests, the handset will support 4G LTE networks. … Read more

ORLANDO, Fla.--As expected, Samsung took the wraps off of a new tablet today at CTIA 2011, and there's not just one brand-spanking new device but actually two: the Samsung Galaxy Tab 8.9 and the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1.

Not to be confused with the other Galaxy Tab 10.1, which was introduced at Mobile World Congress, this version, along with the Tab 8.9, claim to be the "world's thinnest tablets" at just 8.6 millimeters thin. By comparison, the iPad 2 is just a hair thicker at 8.8 millimeters.

Private eye

Scheming teenagers, wayward spouses, and other sneaky computer users sometimes inspire someone to keep an eye on them. BlackBox Security Monitor Express can do this task for you, keeping track of the Web sites, keywords, and text that are entered by each computer user. Whether or not you should be snooping is something we'll refrain from weighing in on; all we'll say is that this program works.

The program's interface is plain and pretty easy to figure out. A wizard walks you through the process of selecting which users or computers are to be monitored; these can … Read more

$89 Kindles gone in a flash

The Blog Kindle blog has an amusing though serious story about how quickly Amazon's $89 Kindle Black Friday deal disappeared.

Billed as a "Lightning Deal," an undetermined number of $89 second-generation Kindles went on sale at 9 a.m. PT and were gone in a nanosecond. In fact, the deal disappeared so quickly some accused Amazon of never having it.

The story quotes an angry message board post from Amazon customer Grebwatcher:

Amazon knew it would be flooded with people wanting this product across the country. To have it NOT available from the SECOND it goes on … Read more

Bare-bones notes

Since so many of us spend so much time on our computers now, it makes sense to have a quick and easy way to take notes there, whether we're recording a great idea or just a reminder to buy milk. Efficient Notes Free gives peoplea way to write themselves notes, but it's not as useful as some similar programs we've seen.

The program's interface reminds us very much of Microsoft Outlook. The screen is split horizontally into two panes, with the top pane displaying each note's title and the bottom pane displaying the selected note'… Read more
