Women in tech: Come to CES, claim your voice

It's not news that women don't come to CES in droves--it's always been this way.

When I bring up the topic, I often get this response from both men and women, sometimes with a shrug: "Women just don't like technology the same way that men do," or "It's like sports; men care about the fiddling with technology. Women just want it to work." The prevailing thinking is that men are from GadgetLand and women are from...somewhere else. And no one seems particularly upset about it.

We should be more upset … Read more

CNET's CES 2012 live streams take live-blogging to the next level

AT CES 2012, CNET is doing something no other media outlet can.

We're live-streaming nearly every CES press conference from CNET's CES 2012 special package along with 20-plus live blogs, then running live commentary from the CNET Stage between events. Why bother setting up the intricate infrastructure it takes to live-stream everything? Because it makes the experience of watching a CES live blog so much more complete.

Just find the keynote or press conference that interests you from our CNET list of events, and you'll see what I mean. When the live stream goes up, we embed … Read more

Leak Week makes CES better (opinion)

Leak Week makes CES better (opinion)

LAS VEGAS--Will there be any news left to announce on CES 2012 Press Day?

Yes, of course there will. Tomorrow's CES lineup of press conferences is as impressive as ever: CNET will be covering 22 live events by tech headliners by my count. But at least six of them have already lost some thunder. So far, tech media has leaked news from Vizio (now with ultrabooks!), Sprint (4G Galaxy Nexus), Nokia and Windows (Nokia "Ace" 900), Nikon (leaks prompted Nikon to release D4 info early), Acer (more, more, more ultrabooks), and even the toy manufacturer Parrot got … Read more

My CES predictions...for 2022

My CES predictions...for 2022

In these heady days before the biggest U.S. tech trade show of the year, the Internet is awash with CES 2012 predictions.

It's amazing how many there are. Hell, the CES hashtag has been featured already on the Twitter Discover tab since Tuesday--a full week before the show formally opens. At CNET, we've been writing about our predictions for weeks in our special CES 2012 package. Netbooks, ultracheap laptops, amazing OLED TVs. It's all there.

Out of curiosity, a colleague looked up the CES schedule for the next 10 years--yes, it exists, with dates selected … Read more

Dear NTSB, please don't sterilize Siri and her friends

Dear NTSB, please don't sterilize Siri and her friends

It's true: I could kill myself using Siri.

I have a car with a built-in hands-free system that I pair with my iPhone 4S while I drive. When I can, I use Siri over the Bluetooth audio speakers. Half the time, "she" doesn't understand me, or she tells me I have to unlock my phone before she'll help me. When Siri works as she should, as a wholly voice-controlled digital assistant that can send and respond to texts, call up maps, and take dictation, she's great. But I admit: interacting with Siri--even over my … Read more

CNET's got your Android coverage right here

Chromebooks and cloud music and tablets, oh my! It was very busy this week at Google's I/O developer conference.

With all the news (and killer freebies) that got tossed around at the event, you're forgiven if you failed to notice that we launched a new and improved Android Atlas. Meet CNET's new Microsoft beat reporter

Meet CNET's new Microsoft beat reporter

It takes a real pro to write about a complex company like Microsoft, and we've got one in Jay Greene, the newest addition to CNET's news reporting staff.

Jay has covered Microsoft for more than a decade, first as a reporter for The Seattle Times and then for nine years as the Seattle bureau chief for BusinessWeek. He's done some big stories on the Redmond gang over the years, including one of the first to point out that the company that seemed invulnerable for so long looked like it was struggling with middle age.

He won a … Read more
